2009
A breakout
season on the diamond for the Schreiner Softball
team led to a large number of recipients for
all-conference honors when the awards were
announced. Surprisingly, considering the
season Schreiner had (26-15 overall, third place
finish in ASC West. first postseason berth since
2003) only senior Tara Gonzales earned first
team All-ASC West honors. Seniors Lyndsie
Travis and Patsy Toman each earned second team
all-ASC West and four more players picked up
honorable mention recognition.
Gonzales (Natalia, TX/Natalia HS) was among the
leaders in the ASC in a number of offensive
categories. She ranked 8th in the ASC with
a .393 batting average in 2009, was fourth in
hits (53), sixth in RBI (42), 10th in slugging
percentage (.637), sixth in total bases (86),
ninth in homers (6) and eighth in doubles with
11. She will graduate next weekend.
Travis, a senior
from Helotes, TX/O'Connor HS, was ranked even
higher in several of those same categories this
year. Travis finished third in the ASC
with 45 RBI, seventh in slugging percentage
(.714), sixth in home runs (10), fourth in total
bases (90) and also was 11th in batting average
at .381. Travis will finish up her
undergraduate work this fall and
graduate in December.

Toman (SR, Hockley, TX) had a big year on the
mound for the Mountaineers. She led the
staff and was sixth in the ASC in wins with 14,
seventh in innings pitched (121), 9th in
strikeouts (75). Her overall record was
14-5 with a
3.70 ERA. Her GPA is even higher as she
gets ready to graduate this weekend.
Currently, she carries a perfect 4.0 GPA at
Schreiner after transferring in prior to her
junior year.
The four honorable mention players are senior
Sarah Trevino (2B), sophomore Marla Jendrusch
(catcher), freshman Becca Hay (RHP/OF) and
junior Lindsay Rutkowski (OF). Trevino
(Alice, TX/Ben Bolt HS) had a strong final year
and will also graduate this weekend. She
was in the top 25 in the ASC in batting (.364)
and was third on the team in doubles (9), RBI
(38) and hits (47). She hit three home
runs this year.
Jendrusch (LaVernia, TX/LaVernia HS) batted .347
with five homers, 30 RBI, 8 doubles and was
among the ASC's leaders in walks (24). He
has quickly established herself as one of the
top, if not the best, catchers in the ASC West.
Hay (Marion, TX/Marion HS) played quite a bit
early last year but was hit by a pitch, broke
her arm less than a third of the way through the
season and was lost for the remainder of the
year. Therefore, she received a medical
hardship and so 2009 was her freshman season.
She made the most of her first full year with a
12-10 record, team-leading 3.40 ERA was among
the ASC leaders in strikeouts (110, 4th in ASC),
innings pitched (135, 3rd), 10th in wins and
second in games started. She also hit a
respectable .316 at the plate with four homers
and 34 RBI while playing outfield when she
wasn't pitching.
Rutkowski (Jourdanton, TX/Jourdanton HS)
patrolled center field for SU. She batted
.342 with 38 hits. Rutkowski, Jendrusch
and Hay form the core for the 2010 season when
the Mountaineers hope to build upon this year's
success. |
