Mountaineers in
Hunt for ASC Tennis Title |
|
By Tom Kellar
The Daily Times
Published April 08, 2005
There’s a buzz on the
Schreiner University campus this week regarding the men’s drive
for a possible American Southwest Conference crown in tennis.
The Mountaineers are
5-0 in the ASC west, in a first-place tie with Hardin-Simmons
University. Results of Thursday night’s match against McMurry were
unavailable at press time.
This is a big week for
the Mountaineers, as they first play McMurry State on Thursday,
then face Hardin Simmons today in what could be a fight for the
ASC’s West Division championship and the opportunity to host the
ASC’s post season championship tournament.
“If we get by McMurry
and Hardin Simmons, then we’ll host the tournament,” head coach
Lee Jennings said. “It would be a significant advantage if we
could host, because then you don’t have to deal with all the
pressures of missing class and being on the road.”
Schreiner is not new to success with its tennis teams. Jennings is
in his 12th year at the helm of the Schreiner program.
“We’ve had teams or
individuals reach the national tournament nine of the first 10
years I was here,” Jennings said. “Both the men’s and women’s
teams won the conference in 1999, and after that we’ve come in
second a couple of times in the west division, and every year but
one, we’ve made the conference post season tournament.”
Last season the
Mountaineers finished second to Hardin-Simmons in the West and
lost to UT-Tyler in the semifinals of the postseason tourney.
Jennings, like all
current coaches at Schreiner, knows well the challenges inherent
in leading a Division III program at a small, private institution
that offers no athletic scholarship money. While some of
Schreiner’s sports programs have found wins hard to come by in
recent years, Jennings has been able to keep his teams playing at
a very competitive level.
“Our success is due
partially to Schreiner’s rich tennis tradition, dating back to the
days when it was a junior college,” Jennings said. “In the 1970s,
Chris Crawford, who is now my assistant, was the head coach, and
he took a team to the national tournament. Dudley Rogers also was
here during the tennis boom of the 70s and had consistently great
programs, recruiting lots of international players.”
“Schreiner and tennis
are synonymous in the tennis community around Texas and even other
states. Everywhere you go, people who are knowledgeable about
collegiate tennis recognize Schreiner as a force.”
This year’s squad is
made up of singles players Christian Sasam, No. 1; Jay Govan, No.
2; Riley Winterringer, No. 3; Joshua Schumann, No. 4; Garrett
Parker, No. 5, and No. 6 starter Brent Colman.
Sasam and Govan form the squad’s
No. 1 doubles team, while Winterringer joins with Colman in the
No. 2 spot. Schumann teams up with Parker at No. 3.
The current crop of
Schreiner players appear to be hungry to take an ASC crown.
“This is my third year here,” Govan said. “I’m ready to win a
conference championship. I think we have a really good chance of
winning it this year. We have a lot of talent on this team.
Winning would mean everything.” Added Sasam, “to win it in my
freshman year would be huge. As the year has gone on we’ve been
peaking for the right matches, so hopefully we can bring it
against Hardin-Simmons.”
Jennings knows for his
team to take an ASC title, everything will have to fall into
place.
“I think we’ve got a
chance to win the division and win the conference,” Jennings said.
“Realistically to do that, we would have to play right at the top
of our potential.”

2005 Season Preview |
|
Posted: 1/13/05
On the
women's side in 2005,
the Schreiner women netters lost their number one player to
graduation and their number four player to academic interests
after the 2004 season. Returning will be junior Leslie Jones,
sophomores Patty Santiago and Emily Cox, and
freshmen Melissa Dunlap, Angelica Hernandez and Becky Bonine. The
women’s team finished the 2004 campaign with two wins in the ASC
West division and is hoping to improve this year.
The men’s team lost all but one player to graduation after a
second place ASC West division showing in 2004. Junior Jay Govan
made the 2004 All ASC Tournament team as a result of his solid
play in the 2004 conference tournament in Mississippi. Govan
should play in the top of the lineup in 2005 and will be joined by
freshmen Christian Sasam,
Brent Coleman, Riley Winterringer and Josh Schumann. The men had
a very promising fall season, highlighted by a trip to the ITA
Regional tournament in Sewanee, Tennessee. Sasam won
two rounds in an extremely tough doubles draw, and were very
competitive in a third round loss to a very experienced Emory
team. All team players posted wins either in the main draw or the
consolation of the regional event.
The team chemistry and work ethic was great this past fall, and
the guys were extremely self motivated during the long off season
stretch before fall finals. The spring season will begin with
some very high level competition featuring some tough Division II,
JUCO and Division III opponents. ASC West Division matches will
begin in March and conclude with the conference tournament on
April 15 & 16. The West Division men’s winner will host the
Conference Tournament which will include the top three teams of
the East and West
