Mountaineers Open Season
with 3-1 Win Over OLL
Schreiner defeated NAIA
(scholarship) Our Lady of
the Lake, 3-1, in the
Mountaineers' season opener
and OLL's first-ever match.
Each game was closely
contested down to the final
points. Schreiner won
the first two games and
looked poised to end the
match in three games.
Only a frantic Saints rally
extended the match to a
fourth game. In the
decisive game, the
Mountaineers (1-0) broke a
31-all tie with the match's
final two points and the
win.
In game 1, SU held a 23-19
lead before OLL, which
featured several NCAA
Division II transfers, went
on a six-point rally of its
own to gain the advantage,
23-25. The key point
came with Schreiner trailing
24-27. After a long
rally, SU sophomore Tiffany
Miller came up with a block
to cut the advantage to 2
points. Schreiner
closed the game with a 6-2
run.
Game 2 saw OLL hold slim
leads, the last being at
25-26. The
Mountaineers scored four of
the next five points.
Freshman Misty Fletcher's
kill on game point gave SU a
30-28 win.
Game three looked well in
hand as Schreiner held a
29-24 lead and match point.
OLL came back with a 7-0 run
to close the match and halve
the match lead to
2-games-to-1.
The final game was another
nip-and-tuck affair.
Schreiner went ahead by six
points early only to see Our
Lady of the Lake battle back
to even the match. The
Saints had a game point at
30-29 but SU won three of
the final four points and
the battle, 3-1.
Freshman Caitlin Gayle
(Bandera HS) led Schreiner
with 13 kills. Junior
Marissa Stearns (Center
Point HS) added 10 kills.
Miller, a sophomore, had 9
kills but also was a
defensive stopper with 3
total blocks.
Sophomore Brittany Alvillar
was tops in digs with 20.
Junior Julie Peddy had 40
assists. OLL's Jessica
Ramirez led all players with
21 kills.
