Opener: SU Gets Scare, Then Dominates

to Xandria White to rebound and slam Sul Ross

Schreiner got a
major scare but rebounded to hammer Sul Ross
State in four games in Alpine. It was the
ASC Opener for SU.
The Mountaineers (3-4, 1-0 in ASC) saw senior
middle hitter Xandria White collapse to the
court in pain just five points into the match.
White, who has seen injuries cost her two
seasons already in her collegiate career, was
helped off the court and did not return.
The team, rattled by the possible loss of one of
its most veteran and talented players, took a
while to get back into the match. Sul Ross
State (0-6, 0-2 in ASC) was able to take
advantage and gain a 25-23 win in game 1.
Whatever head coach Phillip White said in
between games worked quickly and effectively to
inspire the visitors. The Mountaineers
were never really threatened from that point on
and made short work of the final three games,
winning 25-12, 25-20 and 25-13. Sophomore
Caitlin Gayle, who sat out the final two matches
in last weekend's Augsburg (MN) Invitational
with back spasms, came in and did a great job
filling the void created by White's injury.
She finished the match with 18 kills and only
three errors (.441 attack percentage) - one off
White's team high for kills in a match.
Junior Tiffany Miller was almost as good,
accounting for 11 kills and a .420 attack
percentage.
The two made a one-two punch that the Lady Lobos
couldn't counter. "This is one of the
proudest moments of my career", said Coach
White. "The team rallied around X when she
was injured and everyone stepped up to make up
the difference."
Junior defensive specialist Brittany Alvillar
had a match-high 15 digs while senior Marissa
Stearns had 13. Senior setter Malorie
Westerholm provided 26 assists and 8 digs.
The team steps back out of ASC play this weekend
when SU competes in the Southwestern
Invitational in Georgetown. |
