presence felt as SU beat HTU
Schreiner rallied
from a 2-1 deficit to beat Huston-Tillotson,
3-2, at the Southwestern Invitational in
Georgetown.
The Mountaineers (4-5, 1-0 in ASC) were edged in
game #1, 25-23, but rallied for a 25-19 win in
the second game to even the match.
HTU won game three 25-17 before SU made its
rally. Schreiner turned the tables to win
game #4 by the same 25-17 margin to force a
deciding game.
In the fifth game, it was all SU as the
Mountaineers rolled 15-7. Schreiner was
again led by their middle-hitting tandem of
junior Tiffany Miller and sophomore Caitlin
Gayle. Gayle had 20 kills while Miller had
12 with only four errors. Sophomore Misty
Fletcher led the team with 10 digs. HTU
provided tough competition at the net, getting
12 blocks. Usually, that is the area that
SU shines, but the Mountaineers could only
manage three in the match.
Later in the afternoon, SU fell to #25
Southwestern, 3-1, on the Pirates' (8-2) home
floor. Miller led the way with 14 more
kills, while Gayle added 9. Fletcher and
senior Marissa Stearns contributed seven kills
each and Stearns had a team-high 9 digs. |
