Volleyball Downs Sul Ross State Again, 3-1
Photo: the SU defense only had one lapse
against SRS.
For the second
time in 11 days, Schreiner dispatched Sul Ross
State 3-1. This match, held at Edington
Gym in Kerrville, looked like it would be over
quickly.
The Mountaineers (5-6, 2-1 in ASC) made short
work of the Lady Lobos, winning by lopsided
scores of 25-11 and 25-10 to take a commanding
2-0 lead. Unfortunately, SU went into a
lull in game three and Sul Ross State took
advantage of the opportunity by jumping out to a
big early lead and cruised to a convincing 25-14
win to cut the margin in half.
After a spirited between-match pep talk from
head coach Phillip White, Schreiner took an
early 7-5 lead and then went on a run to route
the Lady Lobos and claim the match with a 25-14
score in game four. Tiffany Miller led a
balanced Schreiner offensive attack with 10
kills. Caitlin Gayle and Kaycee Westberry
each had nine kills and Gayle was the most
efficient attacker with a .360 average.
Malorie Westerholm had 27 assists while Misty
Fletcher had 16 digs to lead SU.
The match was the first of four straight home
ASC contests in the next eight days. SU
hosts Concordia-Texas next Tuesday and then
hosts Hardin-Simmons and McMurry next weekend in
Edington Gym.
