New head coach
Phillip White and his troops may be on to
something good as Schreiner went on the road
tonight to trounce Howard Payne, 3-0.
The game scores were not very close as the
Mountaineers (7-8, 4-3 in ASC) imposed their
will on the home team.
SU won convincingly by the scores of 25-17,
25-11 and 25-18 over an HPU squad that came into
the match with back-to-back blowout wins and was
only one game behind the Mountaineers in the ASC
West standings.
Howard Payne (9-7, 2-5 in ASC) also took ASC
West leader Texas Lutheran to its toughest match
of the season, losing 3-2 on TLU's home floor.
Therefore it looked on paper like a tough match
for a Schreiner team that had come off an up and
down week. SU took four games to handily
beat Sul Ross State (who was then trounced by
HPU), lost a difficult and trying match to
visiting Hardin-Simmons, 3-1, and then handed
visiting McMurry a 3-1 loss while playing some
of its best volleyball of the season.
Now, the Mountaineers enter this weekend's ASC
Crossover Tournament in Abilene on a two-match
roll and look to extend the streak to three
against perennial powerhouse East Texas Baptist
on Friday before playing matches vs. Mississippi
College and LeTourneau later Friday and on
Saturday.
As usual, it was
Caitlin Gayle (10 kills, .476 attack percentage)
and Tiffany Miller (9 kills) who led the way.
Senior Xandria White continues to work her way
back into playing form and added 4 kills.
Senior Marissa Stearns led the defensive stats
with 8 digs while Malorie Westerholm had 16
assists. |
