SU Knocks Out Two ASC Foes at ASC Crossover
Schreiner bounced
back from a tough five-game loss in the opening
match to win it's final two matches and complete
a successful first ASC Crossover Tournament.
On Friday evening, SU (9-9, 6-4 in ASC) defeated
Mississippi College, 3-1. Saturday
morning, the Mountaineers had little trouble
putting away LeTourneau, 3-0.
Against Mississippi, SU shook off tired legs
after the ETBU match earlier in the day and
gained an early lead winning the opening game,
25-21. Mississippi (10-7, 3-5 in ASC)
returned the favor by taking game 2, 25-19.
Game three probably was the deciding game and
neither team was willing to fall easily.
It took overtime to decide the game, but
Schreiner got the big momentum boost by winning
27-25. That loss seemed to deflate MC as
SU rolled in game four to a 25-13 win and match
victory. Caitlin Gayle had 10 kills to
lead the Mountaineer effort but Tiffany Miller
led in attack percentage with a .462.
Misty Fletcher and Kaycee Westberry each had 7
kills.
Malorie Westerholm had 21 assists and Brittany
Alvillar had 15 digs.
Schreiner dominated again at the net, recording
18 team blocks to only six by Mississippi.
Miller had 12 block assists.
Against LeTourneau (4-9, 1-6 in ASC), Schreiner
again jumped out to a strong start and easily
took the opener, 25-14. Game two was very
tight but SU again came out on the high side
with a 25-23 win and game three was similar but
the Mountaineers had a little more working room
at the end, winning 25-21.
Gayle and Miller led again with 11 and 9 kills
respectively with Gayle posting an incredible
.688 hitting percentage. The two are #1
and #2 in the ASC in attack percentage and did
nothing to hurt their standing during this
tournament. Freshman Audra Burnap had 18
assists and Kaycee Westberry and Brittany
Alvillar had seven digs each.
Schreiner has now won four of its last five
matches, has moved up to a tie for #3 in the ASC
Western Division race and faces undefeated Texas
Lutheran at home in Edington Gym on Tuesday at
6:00 pm.
