Payne Puts SU's Postseason Hopes on Life Support
with 3-1 Win
It was Senior Night for four Mountaineer players
but there was no celebrating as Howard Payne
handed Schreiner a 3-1 loss that significantly
hurt SU's postseason chances. The final
home match for Xandria White, Marissa Stearns,
Malorie Westerholm and Libby Howard looked
positive in game one but SU had to go well into
overtime to get the early lead. HPU
rallied from a 24-21 lead to go into OT.
Both teams had a chance to win but Schreiner
escaped with a 32-30 win.
From that point
on, HPU won most of the key points, particularly
at the end of games. Howard Payne won
games two and three by 26-24 and 25-22 scores.
In game four, SU started slowly and trailed 6-3.
The Mountaineers would rally for an 18-15 lead
but Howard Payne took control with a 9-1 run.
Schreiner got two points to delay the outcome
but HPU closed out Schreiner's night and quite
possibly their chances of gaining the third and
final spot in the ASC playoffs.
McMurry is 9-4 in ASC play with five matches
remaining. Schreiner is 9-7 (12-12
overall) with only two matches left. SU
plays at McMurry on the last night of the
regular season and must hope that the match
still has meaning. Howard Payne improves
to 14-11 (7-9 in ASC). |
