SU Comes Up Short against 2nd Place TLU

KERRVILLE, TX - The Schreiner Volleyball Team fought to a five-set match tonight in an important ASC West battle against rival Texas Lutheran (TLU), but came up short to lose 3-2.

The Mountaineers came out hot in front of another huge SU crowd to win the first set 25-20.  Caitlyn Gayle led the start with 7 kills, while Tiffany Miller had 6 kills in the first set.  The ASC West 2nd Place Bulldogs (TLU) seemed to settle down and played very well the next two sets.  TLU won the 2nd set 25-17 and the 3rd set 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

SU bounced back to win an exciting fourth set 29-27.  Miller (8 kills) and Gayle (5 kills) led the SU comeback.  The final set was tied 4-4 before TLU then took control.  TLU's short setting game coupled with some SU service errors proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs finished off the Mountaineers 15-9 to win the match.

Miller finished the match with 21 kills on 43 attempts, and Gayle had 15 kills on 36 attempts.  Denise Pichot led with 29 assists, and Audra Burnap added 17 assists.  Brittany Alvillar had 15 digs to lead the Mountaineers.

With the loss, SU remains in 4th place with a record of 15-11 (9-6 ASC).   SU will head to Brownswood, TX this weekend for another crucial match against Howard Payne, before finishing out the regular season at home with their final two matches against McMurry (10/28) and Hardin-Simmons (10/31).
