KERRVILLE, TX - In a packed Edington Gym on Senior Day, the Schreiner Volleyball team lost to ASC West Regular Season Champion Hardin-Simmons 3-2. With the loss, SU ends its season in 4th Place--one game out of the ASC Playoffs. (only the top three teams advance to the ASC post-season).
Today's match was a roller-coaster from start to finish. SU jumped out to an early lead in the first game, with HSU coming back before SU took the first set 25-21. Freshman Kayla Gunstream led SU's attack in the first set with 4 kills.
The second and third sets went HSU's way, but were played out completely different. HSU led from the start in the second set with SU coming back to challenge; HSU took it 25-23. SU seemed to turn the momentum and had a commanding 23-13 lead in the third set. HSU's all-around game showed why the are the ASC West Champions as they were able to claw their way back and overcome a couple set points to win 28-26.
The fourth set was the opposite of the third, as HSU took a commanding lead over SU. With SU's playoff hopes dimming as they found themselves down 19-14. As the SU Faithful revived the energy, SU was able to rebound and win the set 25-23 to push the match into a deciding 5th set.
SU had a slim 6-5 lead, but HSU continued to block and dig SU's attempts the remainder of the set. HSU scored five straight points to take a 10-6 lead, then clinched the victory at 15-10.
It was a bittersweet goodbye to SU Seniors Brittany Alvillar, Tiffany Miller and Kaycee Westberry. All three led once again in the statistical categories. On attack, Westberry had 14 kills while Miller had 12. Alvillar led the Mountaineers on defense with 16 digs. Assistant Coach Joe Anders remarked about the seniors: "They worked tremendously hard this year and their senior leadership was greatly needed and appreciated. They can be proud of their final season and will be greatly missed next year."
SU ends their season at 17-12 (11-7 ASC) which is SU's best record since 2002. With the talented underclassmen and Coach White's leadership, the Mountaineers are undoubtedly going to become regular ASC Playoff participants.
