Enriquez,
Fennell, Lopez Earn All-ASC Awards
Monica Enriquez
picked up two awards when the American Southwest
Conference announced its all conference teams, while
teammates
Tasha Fennell and
Vanessa Lopez
earned one each. Enriquez, who led the team in
nearly every category this year, was named to the All-ASC
West Division First Team. She was the only
freshmen to earn the honor. She was also named to
the ASC West All-Freshmen team.
Enriquez finished as the ASC leader in steals at 4 per
game, and was fourth in the league in scoring (18.5 ppg)
and sixth in both assists (4.2/game) and free-throw
shooting. Fennell joined Enriquez on the
All-Freshmen team after she led the ASC in rebounding at
just under 10 per outing and added just under 10
points/game. Lopez was second on the team in
scoring (16.8 ppg) which was also sixth-best in the ASC
and was second in the conference in field-goal shooting
at over 56%.
SU Women Sweep
Series with Sul Ross State
Schreiner's
"Big Three" carried the Mountaineers to a 71-61 road win
at Sul Ross State and a season series sweep of the Lady
Lobos.
Monica Enriquez and
Tasha Fennell each
had double-doubles. Enriquez scored 18 points and
grabbed 10 rebounds while Fennell contributed 12 points
to go with a game-high 14 rebounds. The
Mountaineers dominated on the boards by a 44-27 margin
but 33 turnovers allowed SRS to keep the game close.
Vanessa Lopez
celebrated her birthday one day early by scoring 16
points and 6 rebounds.
Lori Beck added 8
points off the bench. SU led 37-30 and halftime
and held off Sul Ross by playing tough defense, limiting
them to only 35% shooting for the game and 16% from
three-point range.
CUA Women Puts
Clamps on Mountaineers, 77-84
Schreiner fell
behind early on Senior Day, mounted several rallies,
took several CUA counterpunches -- and that was only in
the first half. CUA was able to claim a slim
34-31 halftime lead. In the second
half, Concordia-Austin's defense took over. CUA
eventually opened up a 20-point lead. Although SU
kept trying to mount a comeback, the Tornado's remained
in control and went on to win in Mountaineer senior
Rachel Estrada's
final game in Edington Center. SU was paced
by
Tasha Fennell with
a game-high 12 rebounds and 15 points.
Monica Enriquez
scored 16 while dishing out six
assists, grabbing 5 boards and getting 3 steals.
Kerrie Carter
continued her fine late-season run with 13 points.
Lynn Stow added 12
points. Estrada scored 5 points in her home
finale.
Mary
Hardin-Baylor Withstands SU Rally
The
Mountaineers made a valiant rally in the second half,
but came up just short at UMHB, 71-64. Mary
Hardin-Baylor held a six point halftime lead (35-29) but
SU quickly got it all back with a 9-2 run to start the
second half. Then, it was UMHB's turn as they went
on a 17-6 run but the Mountaineers rallied in the final
minutes, cutting the lead to just four with 41 seconds
remaining but UMBH converted its free throws to get the
win.
Monica Enriquez led
SU with 22 points and 5 assists.
Vanessa Lopez
scored 18 with six boards and
Tasha Fennell had a
game-high 14 rebounds.
Kerrie Carter added
10 points off the bench.
#17 HSU Cruises
to Home Win
Coach Jeanette
McKinney again went with a totally new starting lineup
and a short bench and it made a difficult game vs. the
nation's 17th-ranked team even tougher.
Hardin-Simmons ran out to a huge first half lead and ran
away with a 95-58 win in Abilene.
Two bench players,
Vanessa Lopez (14
points) and
Monica Enriquez (12
points, 4 assists) led the scoring for SU.
Rachel Estrada
added 10 points.
Kerrie Carter had
nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
St. Mary's
Powers Past SU Ironwomen, 85-50
Schreiner
started an entirely new starting five but St. Mary's
superior size wore down the new-look Mountaineers and
cruised to a road win. SU was overwhelmed, 48-22,
in rebounds and St. Mary's second and third attempts
broke open a tight game through the first 10 minutes of
play. The Mountaineers were only down 19-15 with 8
minutes remaining in the half, but St. Mary's closed
with a 21-9 run to end the first half. The
visitors quickly took control in the second half and won
going away. Schreiner only
dressed 8 players, and started three freshmen (Britney
Foss,
Kerrie Carter and
Lori Beck), one
sophomore (Heather
Lee) and a senior (Rachel
Estrada) and those five got the lion's
share of the playing time. Beck led with 19 points
and had four steals. Estrada added 13 points and
Kerrie Carter 7.
Tasha Fennell came
off the bench to lead in rebounds with 8,
#13 McMurry
Holds Off SU With Late FT's
If one game
defines how far Schreiner Women's Basketball has come
this year, it may well be a 76-70 loss. Unbeaten
and 13th-ranked McMurry had all it could handle with the
Mountaineers and used 8-8 free throw shooting in the
final minute to win their 18th straight game. Although
McMurry held a 41-34 halftime edge, the game featured
runs back and forth and was close throughout.
Despite 17 points and 17 rebounds from
Tasha Fennell, SU
had no answer for 6'0 Tarra Richardson who scored 31 for
the Indians.
Monica Enriquez
added 22 points, four assists and
three steals.
Lori Beck had a big
first half for the Mountaineers and tallied 13 points.
The Mountaineers - with no player taller than 5'9 -
outrebounded McMurry which had three players taller than
5'11 - by one in the game.
HSU Shuts
Down SU Women in Second Half
Schreiner and
Hardin-Simmons played to a draw (38-38) in the first 20
minutes, but HSU used a 33-13 run to open the second
half and ran away with a 80-63 win. The
Mountaineers tried to recover but could never get closer
than 13 points the rest of the way.
Vanessa Lopez
returned to the lineup after
having to sit out the last game due to illness and
scored a game-high 26 points.
Monica Enriquez had
17 to go with six rebounds while
Tasha Fennell had
nine points and 13 boards in the loss. Lopez and
Enriquez powered SU in the first half combining for 27
points, but were shut down in the deciding second-half
run by the Lady Cowboys.
HPU Knocks Off
Short-handed SU Women
It was a key
game for the surging Mountaineers, but Schreiner had to
battle Howard Payne without two of its starters, one of
whom was the ASC's fourth-leading scorer
Vanessa Lopez.
Although the game was close for most of the way, the
Lady Jackets were able to keep SU at arms length and
post a 78-63 win in Edington Center.
Schreiner was again led by
Monica Enriquez
with 25 points, 4 steals and 4 assists.
Tasha Fennell had
17 points and eight rebounds and
Lynn Stow had 11
points.
Amanda Flores
started the game in place of Lopez who missed the game
due to illness. Flores had 8 rebounds to tie for a
team high.
Women Escape
with "W" Against Sul Ross State, 71-62
It was
almost deja-vu. The last time Schreiner and Sul
Ross State met, one team was winless and the other
trying not to look ahead. Last time, it was
Schreiner with the winless record and the eventual win
in the final game of last season. This time, it
was winless Sul Ross State but early on and at halftime,
it looked like no contest. The Mountaineers got
started early and raced to a 27-9 lead and dominated the
first half, 36-16.
In the second half, SU started very slowly and Sul Ross
quickly erased the huge lead. It went back and
forth for a while, but the Mountaineers got just enough
of a lead and were able to pull away in the closing
seconds.
Monica Enriquez was
the leading scorer with 16 points, but it was
Lynn Stow
(10 points, 7 rebounds and 6
assists) and
Tasha Fennell (11
points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals) who were the catalysts for
Schreiner. With the win, SU is now 4-2 in the new
year.
Vanessa Lopez
battled illness but was able to contribute 11 points.
CUA Pulls Away
Late for 87-76 Win over SU Women
It was "coming
home" day for SU head coach Jeanette McKinney.
Unfortunately, it was her former team, Concordia-Austin,
that was able to get the victory. If playing her
former boss and team - on the road - wasn't enough,
Coach McKinney and the Mountaineers battled an even more
formidable foe - the officials. Despite the
obstacles, Schreiner rallied and briefly took the lead
in the second half, but CUA quickly regrouped and was
able to pull away.
For the second time in her brief career,
Monica Enriquez
flirted with ASC history. She tallied 22 points, 9
rebounds, 8 assists and 8 steals and nearly had the
league's first quadruple double.
Vanessa Lopez had a
team high 25 points while
Tasha Fennell,
still battling illness, had a team high 11 rebounds to
go with 8 points.
Marissa Stearns
added 8 points and four boards. SU is now 3-2 in
2006.
Bench Comes
Up Big as SU Women Improve to 3-1 in '06
While the
Schreiner women's team battles illness, the team is
racking up wins. Paced by the Mountaineer bench,
SU improved to 3-1 in 2006 with a 62-54 win over
visiting UMHB. This time,
Tasha Fennell was
bit with the illness bug and could only manage 2 points
and 5 rebounds. The Mountaineer non-starters
accounted for nearly one-third (19) of Schreiner's
points and plenty of valuable minutes.
Monica Enriquez had
a hot first half (12 points) and the bench added 13 in
powering SU to a 35-19 lead at the break. Although
Mary Hardin-Baylor tried to rally, the final outcome was
never in doubt and the closest UMHB got was the final
score. Enriquez finished with 17 points,
Vanessa Lopez contributed 14 points and six rebounds and
Lynn Stow led the
team with 5 assists to go with 5 points and 3 steals.
Women's Team
Uses 11-1 Run to Finish Off TLU
On a night
when SU could only manage one assist, and against a
Texas Lutheran team that held a 10-3 advantage in made
three-point shots, it was the Mountaineers that rallied
to a big victory, 68-62, and sweep of the season series.
Tasha Fennell
led the way with 13 points
and a career-high 17 rebounds.
Monica Enriquez
battled foul trouble again but still managed 16 points,
six rebounds and five steals and scored the team's final
five points.
Vanessa Lopez added
14 points. On this
night, it was the Schreiner bench that came up big
scoring 17 points and providing plenty of valuable
minutes that kept SU in the game until the late rally.
SU has now won two of its first three games in 2006.
Mississippi
Stops Game Mountaineer Women, 87-74
Schreiner's
Women's Basketball team continued it's strong start in
2006, but it wasn't enough to take down ASC Eastern
Division leading Mississippi.
Vanessa Lopez again
led the way with 21 points, including shooting 10-11
from the free throw line.
Monica Enriquez
added 14 points and six steals while fellow freshman
Tasha Fennell
contributed 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. SU was only
down 41-35 at the break, but Mississippi College quickly
pushed that lead to double digits to start the second
half. SU never trailed by more than 13 but could
get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Still, going into an important week, the level of play
continues to improve and optimism is high for this young
group of Mountaineers.
"Big 3" Power
Mountaineers to 88-73 Victory
Although
it's a team game, the Mountaineers "Big 3" came up big
in powering SU to a win over visiting Louisiana College.
Tasha Fennell (13
points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) got Schreiner going early,
Vanessa Lopez (29
points, 11 boards) dominated in the second half and
Monica Enriquez (18
points, 7 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds) ran the show
when Louisiana got what had been a 22-point lead down to
nine with 11 minutes to go in the contest. The game
really turned late in the first half. LC led 18-16
with under 8 minutes remaining before Schreiner
unleashed a ferocious full-court press and
combined Fennell with
Heather Lee to
dominate the boards. SU went on a 24-4 run to
close out the first half with a 40-22 lead. Lopez
took over in the second half, scoring 23 points in the
final 20 minutes.
Rachel Estrada also
came up big in the second half, scoring 10 of her 12
points after the break.
Women
Dominate Stats but Fall at Ozarks, 104-98
The SU Women
won the stats battle, but lost the war, falling late at
Ozarks.
Vanessa Lopez had a
monster game, 39 points and 12 rebounds, while
Monica Enriquez
continued her excellent play adding 23 points and 7
assists, but it wasn't enough to get the win.
Schreiner held
a 46-41 lead at the half and came out of the locker room
hot, extending it to 60-49 but Ozarks roared back, took
control and held off the Mountaineer comeback bid.
The Mountaineers controlled the much-bigger Ozarks
front-line and had a 52-41 rebounding edge. They
also outshot Ozarks 49%-46% (field goals), 44%-31%
(3-pointers) and at the line, 69%-64%.
Tasha Fennell added
9 rebounds and 7 points and
Lori Beck scored 10
points.
Comeback Falls Short
The
Mountaineers were ahead most of the first half, but
Austin College used a late 19-5 run to gave them a 36-29
lead at halftime. In the second half, Schreiner
mounted a now-typical second-half rally and tied the
score at 65 with under 45 seconds remaining. An
Austin basket and an SU missed layup led the
Mountaineers to fouling AC. Austin converted its
free throws in the final seconds and survived with a
71-65 ASC win over the visiting Mountaineers. Once again,
Schreiner was led by
Monica Enriquez's
29 points (8-14 shooting) to go with six rebounds.
Enriquez is the ASC's leading scorer and also leads in
steals (she had 4 in this game).
Vanessa Lopez had
15 points.
Tasha Fennell had
11 points and 9 rebounds.
Amanda Flores also
had 9 boards.
UTD Avoids SU
Run and Pulls Away
Coach Jeanette
McKinney's squad dug a big first-half hole and couldn't
recover in falling to visiting UT - Dallas, 87-69.
The Mountaineers couldn't stop UTD's offense, as the
Comets shot better than 54% for the game. UTD held
a 44-31 halftime lead. SU was able to chip away at
the lead and got to as close as five points before the
Comets pulled away.
Freshman
Monica
Enriquez
again led the
Mountaineers with 29 (including 17-18 from the
free-throw line) to go with six rebounds. Sophomore
Vanessa
Lopez added 19 points and
freshman
Tasha
Fennell
had her best game
in a Schreiner uniform with 12 points and a game-high 16
boards. SU was decisively ahead in rebounding,
holding a 32-21 edge but committed 31 turnovers.
Second
Half Rally Comes Up Just Short
Coaches don't
like to talk about moral victories, but the SU Women might
have had one in their home opener on Thursday. Still,
the final was a 82-78 loss to preseason #1 pick, UT - Tyler.
The
Mountaineers, hurt by 14 first half turnovers and 45% foul
shooting, we down 36-24 at the half. The UTT lead grew
to 16 early in the second half. SU could have given
up. Instead, the
Mountaineers rallied throughout the second half and had a
chance to tie the game with under 10 seconds remaining but
the comeback bid fell short. Freshman
Monica
Enriquez
again was a standout, leading all scorers with 31
points and adding 8 steals and 5 assists. Freshman
Tasha
Fennell
had a team-high 13 rebounds. Sophomores
Vanessa
Lopez
(17 points) and
Lynn Stow
(10 points) each had seven rebounds on the night.
LeTourneau Edges Foul-Plagued Mountaineers
Schreiner had a
six-point lead with less than two-minutes remaining at
LeTourneau but couldn't hold on, falling 82-77. All
five SU starters had at least four fouls and three fouled
out before the contest was decided. Freshman
Lori Beck
led all scorers with 21 points. Sophomore
Amanda
Flores
had 13 rebounds to go with 8 points and 5 steals.
Sophomore
Lynn Stow
added 12 points and six rebounds and senior
Rachel
Estrada
contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman
Monica
Enriquez
bounced back after missing the ETBU game
with the flu and managed 7 points, 5 rebounds and six
steals. Lopez, Flores and Estrada all fouled out. On Saturday,
East Texas Baptist rolled to a 92-54 win in Marshall, TX.
Freshman
Tasha
Fennell
led all scorers with 13 points and Flores led the team with
seven rebounds.
Lopez,
Enriquez Power SU to Opening Win
Forget the past. It
took only one game for the 2005-06 SU Women's Basketball
to break into the win column and give new head coach
Jeanette
McKinney her first head coaching victory,
but it wasn't easy. Despite 39 points from
sophomore
Vanessa
Lopez and a near-record-setting
performance from freshman point guard
Monica
Enriquez (22 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals
and eight assists), the Mountaineers still had to go
overtime to knock off Texas Lutheran, 96-87, in Seguin. It looked like
SU was going to win the game in regulation, but TLU hit
a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send it to OT. With
it's history, and a very young roster, the situation
could have spelled disaster for Schreiner. Proving
the past is dead, the Mountaineers dominated the
overtime, shooting a perfect 5-5 in the extra period and
shooting 9-11 from the free-throw line to clinch the
season-opening win. Lopez was
nearly unstoppable, going 13-17 from the field and 13-21
from the foul line, while adding 5 rebounds.
Enriquez, playing her first collegiate game, was just as
good, leading the Mountaineers in rebounds, assists and
steals. No player in ASC history has ever had a
quadruple double, yet Enriquez was just two assists
short of the historic achievement. Senior
Rachel
Estrada
added 15 points
, on 7-9 shooting to go with 5 rebounds, for the
Mountaineers (1-0, 1-0 ASC). |
