Schreiner Earns Back-to-Back Victories at TLU's Expense
For only the second time
in 6 years the Schreiner women's basketball team has earned
a season sweep of an opponent. Texas Lutheran came
into the game struggling on the season, and were unable to
break into the win column as SU dominated the game in the
second half to send the Bulldogs home empty handed.
Riding the
momentum of last Saturday's win over LeTourneau University,
the Mountaineers opened up the game on a run, pushing out to
an early 21-8 lead. The Bulldogs fought back with the
tenacity due their name, though. TLU forced turnovers
and took advantage of opportunities to pull the game back to
even, and then pulled briefly ahead. The Mountaineers
pushed back, however, quickly reclaiming the lead.
They would never again let it go. The first half ended
with Schreiner up by four points.
In the
second half the Mountaineers began to stretch the lead out
again. SU's defensive pressure forced multiple Bulldog
turnovers, and Schreiner was able to convert many of them
into easy points. The Mountaineers opened up a
double digit lead early in the second half, and TLU was
never able to close the gap.
Schreiner
was led in scoring by sophomore
Monica Enriquez.
Shaking off a recent scoring slump, the standout guard had
20 points on 6-8 shooting, including 2-2 from beyond the
arc. Enriquez also had 4 steals and 5 rebounds.
Junior
Vanessa Lopez had 12
points, while
Liberty
Liesmann and
Courtney Davis had 11
points each. Liesmann and Lopez each had 6 rebounds,
while
Kerri Carter had 7 boards
to lead the team. TLU was led by Nicolo Medrano
with 13 points on 6-11 shooting.
The
Mountaineers improve their record to 4-8, and 4-5 in
conference play. The loss drops TLU to 0-13 for the
season, and to 0-9 in the conference.
