Schreiner Uses Big Second Half to Run Past TLU in Season
Opener
The Schreiner
women’s basketball team got their season off to a good start
on Saturday afternoon, beating conference rival Texas
Lutheran. The Mountaineers struggled early, but found their
rhythm and sent the Bulldogs down to defeat by a score of
64-56.
The first
half belonged to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs as they fought
to protect their home court. TLU out-shot the visiting
Mountaineers in the half, 42.9% to 22.2%. Schreiner
shot 0-8 from behind the 3-point line. The Mountaineers went
into halftime behind by 12 points. “We were getting the
shots that we wanted,” said head coach Jeanette McKinney,
“But we couldn’t’ find the bottom of the basket.”
The second
half saw a re-energized SU squad take the floor. Sophomore
Kerrie Carter came off the
bench, and sparked the Mountaineer comeback. Schreiner
shot 41% from the floor in the final half, while a tough
defense limited TLU to only 27 shots. SU sought more
of their own points from inside the 3-point
line, and focused their energy into defensive intensity.
The Mountaineers outscored TLU 45-24 in the half, and
finished out the game with a 64-56 lead.
Schreiner
was led in scoring by Junior guard
Lynn Stow, who had 14
points on 6-9 shooting. Sophomore
Monica Enriquez had 13
points and 9 assists, just one assist shy of a
double-double.
Casey Garcia stepped up in
the second half and handled the point position with poise
unusual in a freshman. Both teams had 46 total rebounds,
but SU had 29 offensive boards. The Mountaineers were also
active on defense, forcing 30 TLU turnovers.
The
Mountaineers next opponent in Div. I UT Pan-American. The
game will be played in Edinburg, TX on Tuesday, November 21st.
The squad will have their home opener on November 30th
against conference opponent University of the Ozarks.
Tip-off for that game will be at 5:30 PM.
