UT-Pan American has Record-Setting Night in Home Win
UT-Pan American has full
scholarships and plenty of resources as an NCAA Division I
program. Schreiner is NCAA Division III and
non-scholarship. The differences were evident as the
Mountaineers were soundly beaten by UTPA in Edinburg,
110-49. It was the highest scoring night in UTPA
history.
If playing in a Division I arena and knowing that your
scores would be shown nationally was daunting to the
Mountaineers, they didn't show it early. At the first
break in action, SU was trailing only 10-9 but that would be
as good as it got for the visitors. UTPA went on a
38-7 run over the next 10 minutes and held a 56-26 lead at
halftime.
If the Mountaineers had any thoughts of a comeback, the Lady
Broncos ended that idea with a 20-0 run to start the second
half.
SU shot 45% from the floor in the first half but was held to
28% in the second. The Lady Broncos won the rebounding
battle, 43-27 and shot nearly 64% from the field on the
night against the much smaller Mountaineers.
Monica Enriquez led
Schreiner with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting in just 16
minutes. Freshman
Ashley Vano was next in
scoring with 8 points off the bench. Sophomore
Paris Cunningham led the
Mountaineers in assists with four. Sophomore
Kerrie Carter chipped in
seven rebounds.
