Mountaineers Pull Away from SRS for 67-50 Win
Sul Ross State
threatened to get back into their game at Schreiner but
back-to-back three point baskets by Monica Enriquez and Lynn
Stow late in the game erased all doubt about the outcome.
The Lady Lobos had closed to within 49-42 with more than
eight minutes remaining but Enriquez and Stow's long-range
sharp shooting pushed the bulge back to 13 and SU was not
threatened again.
Both teams started the game
slowly as Sul Ross held only a 4-0 lead four minutes into
the game. Schreiner got its offense and defense in
gear and went on a 34-15 run over the next 14 minutes to
take a 34-19 lead but SRS (4-9, 2-8 in ASC) got the half's
final four points and cut the halftime margin to 34-23.
The Lady Lobos could only manage 26% shooting and SU's defense
forced 14 first half turnovers.
In the second half, SRS
continued to cut into the lead and got within 5 points early
in the second half. Schreiner's defensive pressure
held the Lady Lobos to 27 shooting and forced 31 turnovers on the night
- making any
comeback difficult and eventually allowing the Mountaineers
(5-6 in ASC, 5-8 overall) to pull away at the end. SU
was led by
Monica Enriquez with 14
points and 5 steals.
Kerrie Carter had 12 points
and a team-high 6 rebounds off the bench while
Lori Beck added 11 points.
Sul Ross was led by Nitra Woods with 16 points and 13
rebounds.
The Mountaineers have now won three of their last four
ASC games.
