Ends Season on High Note with Win at SRS
Schreiner won it's
final game of the season and won at Sul Ross State for the
second straight year, and it happened in exciting fashion.
Kerrie Carter's last second
basket completed a comeback from nine points down with 53
seconds remaining and propelled Schreiner past the Lady Lobos, 77-75, in
Alpine.
Sul Ross State (6-18, 4-17 in ASC) opened up a lead in the
first half that grew to as much as 10 points but the
Mountaineers kept fighting back. At halftime, the home
team only led 34-30. In the second half, the Lady
Lobos again threatened to pull away, leading by 14 points
with 13 minutes remaining. With less than one minute
left, it still looked like the home team had the game well
in hand leading by nine. Consecutive baskets by senior
Liberty Liesmann
started the rally. Schreiner's
Monica Enriquez hit a three pointer to tie the game
at 75-all. Enriquez then blocked and rebounded an SRS layup attempt and
started a two-on-one fast break with seconds left. She
hit Carter who scored the winning basket just before the
final horn sounded.
Enriquez led all
scorers with 19 points and had 7 rebounds and four assists.
Carter was just as effective, contributing 15 points and a
team-high nine boards off the bench.
Courtney Davis added 12
points. Liesmann - playing
in her final game at SU - had 14 points in 28 minutes of
action. The Mountaineers (6-19, 6-15 in ASC) only had
11 turnovers on the day and finished the season in sixth
place in the ASC West Division race.
