Heitmiller's FT's Beat
Schreiner, 71-69
Two free throws by Blair
Heitmiller with less
than 10 seconds
remaining proved to be
the difference as
visiting Mary
Hardin-Baylor edged
Schreiner 71-69.
Both teams squandered
numerous chances in the
final five minutes
trying to gain a final
edge.
Schreiner shot out of
the gate and opened the
game on a quick 9-2 run.
The Mountaineers (4-10
in ASC) were able to
extend the lead to 15-6
at the first break.
Schreiner tried to use
three post players but
could not stop UMHB
freshman post Landie
Thompson the rest of the
first half as the Lady
Crusaders (8-5) caught
and passed SU.
Thompson finished the
first half with 20
points and 12 rebounds.
Her 7 offensive rebounds
at halftime were two
more than the Schreiner
team. SU's three
posts could only manage
1 point, 9 rebounds and
7 fouls. UMHB took
a 38-29 lead into the
locker room.
The second half was a
different story as SU
was able to control
Thompson and even get
her into foul trouble.
In the first seven
minutes, SU had chopped
the deficit down to two,
44-46. The
Mountaineers finally
drew even with just
under 9 minutes
remaining at 58-all.
It was tied at 66-all
with less than five
minutes to go when both
offenses bogged down.
Freshman Lee Richardson
hit a 3-point shot with
2:15 to go to give
Schreiner a 69-68 lead.
UMHB split a pair of
free throws to tie it up
and that was the way it
stayed until the final
10 seconds.
Thompson led all scorers
with 26 points and 14
rebounds.
Schreiner was paced by
freshman Anna Fareed
with 20 points and four
assists. Junior
Monica Enriquez had 18
points, six rebounds and
5 steals in the loss.
Sophomore Courtney Davis
and Richardson added 11
and 10 points
respectively.
