Enriquez Nears Triple
Double as SU Beats UMHB
Junior Monica Enriquez
led three Schreiner
players with 19 or more
points as the
Mountaineers won 83-75
at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Enriquez had arguably
her best game in two
years - and maybe ever -
with 24 points, 9
rebounds, 9 assists and
7 steals. Freshman
Anna Fareed scored 21
and sophomore Courtney
Davis added 19.
SU started fast again,
getting out to a 12-7
lead barely five minutes
into the game but UMHB
rallied. Unlike
last week's game that
UMHB (10-6 in ASC) won
in the final seconds, it
was the Mountaineers who
created a modest lead by
halftime, 40-34.
In the second half,
Schreiner (5-11 in ASC)
quickly doubled the
lead. The Lady
Crusaders would close to
within six points on two
occasions but SU pulled
away each time.
With six minutes
remaining, Schreiner was
in control and led,
67-51 and kept control
the rest of the way.
Schreiner won despite
taking 26 less shots
from the floor.
Their defense held UMHB
to 37% shooting.
Where SU dominated was
at the free throw line.
The Mountaineers shot 29
free throws to just 10
for UMHB but made a
sizzling 90% of their
attempts.
Senior Amanda Flores had
eight rebounds and
freshman Lee Richardson
added 7 for SU.
UMHB freshman Landie
Thompson, who torched SU
last week for 26 points
and 14 rebounds, was
held to a more modest 12
points and 9 rebounds in
this game.
Enriquez is putting in
an MVP-type season.
She is currently second
in the ASC in both
steals and assists,
fifth in scoring, ninth
in free throw shooting
and 14th in rebounding -
despite being a point
guard.
