#2 Howard Payne Remains
Perfect and Ends SU's
Season
Second-ranked Howard
Payne completed a
perfect regular season
by easily beating
Schreiner, 85-44.
The loss ended the
careers of SU's seniors,
Lynn Stow and Amanda
Flores.
Howard Payne (21-0 in
ASC) wasted no time in
getting the Mountaineers
(6-15 in ASC) in a huge
hole. The Lady
Yellow Jackets scored
the game's first 19
points. Junior
Xandria White's free
throw got Schreiner on
the board with 14:46
remaining in the half
but the onslaught
continued.
By halftime, HPU led
42-20 and thoroughly
dominated Schreiner in
most categories.
In particular, HPU
handled SU on the boards
and held a commanding
24-5 edge at the break.
In the second half, it
was more of the same.
Howard Payne's
rebounding bulge at
game's end was 43-14.
Junior Monica Enriquez
was the focal point of
the HPU defensive
effort. Her 10
points were well below
her average and she
could only manage 4
rebounds, 1 assist and 2
steals - all well off
her season averages.
Stow added eight points
in her final game.
Given the fact that
Schreiner returned only
two proven scorers, had
a major overhaul of
their roster, dealt with
serious injuries and
illness and had a large
number of freshmen
contributors, the fact
that SU earned one more
win than last year gives
the team something to
build on.
