Mountaineers Can't Hold
Big Early Lead, Fall at
Southwestern
Schreiner started the
opposite way it did at
Ozarks on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the
ending was also exactly
opposite as Southwestern
University overcame a
big early deficit to
defeat SU, 75-65.
The Mountaineers (2-4)
raced out to a big 14-2
and then 21-4 lead
barely eight minutes
into the contest in
Georgetown, but the
Pirates (6-2) were
undaunted and kept
digging themselves out
of the hole they were
in. Southwestern
mounted rallies but
Schreiner held them off
in the first half.
At halftime, SU still
maintained a 37-29 lead
but the Pirates were
just warming up.
In the second half,
Southwestern turned the
tables and came out on
fire. The
once-comfortable lead
was gone less than 3-1/2
minutes into the second
half. In 10
minutes, Southwestern
matched its first half
output, but Schreiner
could only manage eight
points in that span and
fell behind 58-45.
The Mountaineers got
within seven points with
35 seconds remaining but
really never again
scared the Pirates.
Junior Monica Enriquez
continued to lead SU
with 18 points.
Freshman Anna Fareed
came off the bench to
score 17.
Schreiner was
out-rebounded in the
contest 45-28.
Southwestern shot 55%
(including nearly 66% in
the second half) from
the field for the game
while Schreiner managed
31%.
The Mountaineers travel
to Hawaii today and then
have two games in two
days on the big island.
