SU Sprints to Big Lead
and Defeats Pacific,
68-53
For the second straight
game, Schreiner raced to
a big early lead.
Unlike Monday's game at
Southwestern, SU kept
control for a 68-53 win
vs. Pacific in the first
game of the Hoop N Surf
Classic in Honolulu, HI.
The Mountaineers (3-4)
came out shooting and
quickly took the lead.
After six minutes of
action, Schreiner held a
14-2 lead. The
offensive and defensive
onslaught continued and
SU built the lead to
30-10 with three minutes
remaining before
halftime. To that
point, Pacific (1-6) was
held to just two field
goals. The Boxers
would find some shooting
range and was able to
close the gap to 31-18
at halftime.
Schreiner scored nearly
half its points (13) off
of PU turnovers.
Pacific kept applying
pressure early in the
second half. Less
than three minutes into
the second half, Pacific
was within six points
but Schreiner kept
answering each Boxer
run. Pacific
closed within four
points on two occasions,
first at 46-42 with less
than 10 minutes left and
then again at 52-48 with
7-1/2 minutes remaining
but Schreiner closed the
game with a 14-4 run to
ice the victory.
Junior Monica Enriquez,
who earlier this week
was named ASC West
Player of the Week, led
four Mountaineer players
in double digits with 18
points, 5 rebounds and 5
assists. Sophomore
Courtney Davis had 15
points, senior Lynn Stow
and junior Amanda Flores
added 11 and 10 points
respectively.
Flores had a team-high 8
rebounds.
Schreiner had its best
shooting half of the
year in the second half
of this game. The
Mountaineers shot 59%
from the field to keep
Pacific from mounting a
comeback. SU was
out-rebounded 45-30 in
the contest but held
Pacific without a field
goal over the final
3-1/2 minutes.
