WBKB Opens Season with
Two Loses at Shootout
Schreiner opened the
2008-09 season with two
big loses at the San
Antonio Shootout at
Trinity University this
weekend. Trinity
took the first game of
the tournament on Friday
by a 88-60 score and
then #10 Depauw took
even less mercy, beating
SU 90-52 on Saturday.
Both opposing teams are
from the SCAC
conference.
In both games, Schreiner
was able to take the
briefest of early leads
by scoring first.
Against the tournament
host Tigers (4-1), it
was freshman Caitlin
Gayle's basket that gave
the Mountaineers a 2-0
early lead, but that
turned into a 5-2
deficit just seconds
later. By the
midway point of the
first half, Schreiner
trailed 25-12 and fell
further behind (36-17)
before the deficit
settled at 18 going into
halftime. That
halftime deficit was as
close as the
Mountaineers (0-2) would
get in the second half
as well. Senior
Monica Enriquez had 13
points, 7 rebounds and
four steals to lead SU.
Senior Xandria White
came off the bench and
scored 12 points and
brought down six
rebounds. Freshman
Hannah Burleson also
gave a spark off the
bench with 10 points in
her collegiate debut.
Against
nationally-ranked Depauw,
it was sophomore
transfer Mel Bluhm who
got the Mountaineers on
the board first.
For the rest of the
first half, Schreiner's
demise was a rash of
turnovers. 18 of
them gave Depauw (3-2)
plenty of extra chances
and they took advantage
building a 49-22 lead
going into the locker
room.
Schreiner took better
care of the basketball
in the second half, but
the damage was already
done. SU, which
has a host of new
players this fall, could
attribute a lot of the
TO's to the new folks.
Only two of the team's
26 turnovers were
attributed to returning
players. Still, it
was not the opening
weekend the team was
hoping for.
Again, Enriquez led the
scoring with 13 points
followed by Bluhm's 12.
Gayle had six rebounds.
Depauw had 18 steals in
the game. The
Mountaineers were beaten
handily on the glass,
46-32, in the game.
One bright spot is that
SU shot better in this
game (39%) from the
field.
The Mountaineers play
their home opener on
Monday against UT-Tyler
in Edington Gym at 5:30
