Overcome Enriquez's
Heroics for 70-69 Win

Ashley Shepard hit one
of two free throws with
six seconds remaining
and it was enough to
give visiting LeTourneau
a 70-69 win over
Schreiner. The
loss offset one of the
best performances of SU
senior Monica Enriquez's
brilliant career.
Enriquez, with help from
freshman Caitlin Gayle
(20 points, 8 rebounds)
almost were able to pull
this game out but SU
couldn't make the plays
down the stretch to get
the win.
Unlike recent games, the
Mountaineers came out
early, led by the two
Mountaineers. With
Gayle scoring five
points and Enriquez
getting a basket and two
quick assists, SU built
a 9-2 lead and extended
it to 15-5 just six
minutes into the
contest. The
Yellow Jackets (3-7, 2-3
in ASC) rallied to
within three points but
SU was able to hold off
the visitors until the
waning seconds of the
half. LU took its
first lead with 90
seconds before halftime
and held a 34-31 lead at
the break. One big
reason for SU's better
performance was that the
team only committed 8
first half turnovers.
To start the second
half, Enriquez took the
game over. For the
first five minutes,
Schreiner went on a 11-2
run with Enriquez
accounting for 4 points,
3 assists and 4 steals
by herself in that short
span. SU opened a
six point lead but
eventually LeTourneau
answered back. The
Yellow Jackets took a
five point lead into the
final minutes but
Enriquez again led her
team back. Her two
free throws with 1:10
gave Schreiner a 68-67.
LeT's Kirby Posey scored
a basket to put the
visitors ahead by one.
SU senior Xandria White
tied the game at 69 with
10 seconds left when she
split a pair of free
throws. On the
ensuing inbounds play,
White fouled Shepard
which gave her the
chance to score the
winning point. SU
had one last chance but
freshman Hannah Burleson
was whistled for
charging with one second
left on the clock.
Enriquez - a four year
star for Schreiner -
tallied 25 points, 11
steals and 8 assists.
She could have had even
more assists but SU
players were not able to
convert some great
passes late in the game.
Together, Enriquez and
Gayle combined for 30 of
SU's 38 second half
points. Gayle
played her best game as
a Mountaineer, going
9-for-13 from the field.
One other factor that
didn't help Schreiner's
day was long-range
shooting. SU
finished 1-for-16 from
long distance.
SU gets back on the
court tomorrow at 2:00
pm to host East Texas
Baptist.
