FT Shooting Prowess Carries ETBU Past Schreiner, 78-68

With the game on the line, visiting East Texas Baptist made 11 straight free throws to preserve a 78-68 road win at Schreiner.  The Mountaineers were unable to find similar success from the same charity stripe down the stretch and that was a telling factor in the outcome of the game.

SU started slowly and quickly found itself down 10, 18-8, just seven minutes into the game.  The Tigers (3-5, 3-3 in ASC) were on fire from long range and that helped create the early margin.  The lead widened before senior Monica Enriquez (21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals) and freshman LaTisha Hall went to work and got the lead back to 8 points at 28-20.  ETBU maintained that differential (41-33) at halftime, despite SU having only one assist in the opening half and shooting only 29% from the field.

In the second half, SU found some additional offense and rebounding from senior Xandria White (11 points, 8 boards).  While the teams kept going back and forth for the first 15 minutes, SU wasn't able to pull even, but ETBU couldn't pull away either.  White made a short jumper and was fouled with 6:10 remaining.  Although she couldn't convert the free throw, she got the back back shortly after and made another layup and again was fouled.  This time, she made the free throw and SU was only down 65-61.  That's where the free throw prowess of the Tigers took over.  While ETBU was stringing 11 straight FT's together, SU only managed 2-7 from the line.

For the game, only Enriquez made more than 50% of their shots from the free throw line for SU.  She was 11-for-12 from the stripe, but her teammates converted just 9-for-27 (33%) of their free shots for the game.  Freshman Lia Phillips had eight points and seven rebounds but ETBU slowly pull away in the closing moments.

For the second straight game, Schreiner did keep its turnovers down and had two less than the visitors.  For the game, the Mountaineers had six assists.
