Defending National
Champs Beat SU for 2nd
Time in Week
Defending National
Champions Howard Payne
beat Schreiner 83-56 in
Brownwood. The
Mountaineers got in foul
trouble early in the
game and that hindered
any chances of staying
with the Lady Jackets.
Five minutes into the
game, HPU had already
built a 15-6 lead.
By that time, SU already
had four fouls, two on
freshman LaTisha Hall.
By the midway point of
the first half,
Schreiner had cut the
lead to three, 15-12, on
a layup by freshman
Ayesha Safo. HPU
quickly built the lead
back up to double
digits. The lead
would inflate to as much
as 16 before a late SU
run brought it back to
11 at halftime, 41-30.
Schreiner committed 13
first half fouls to
seven for HPU.
Hall had three fouls and
four other Mountaineers
had two each including
both senior guard Monica
Enriquez and freshman
guard Hannah Burleson
(18 first half points).
In the second half, the
Lady Jackets took
control as SU fouls
continued to mount.
Schreiner could get no
closer than 10 points
early in the half and
HPU slowly pulled away
for the comfortable win.
Despite the foul
problems, Burleson had
22 points and six
rebounds on 10-for-16
shooting in 28 minutes
of action.
Enriquez, one of the
ASC's leading scorers,
only had 2 points on
1-for-5 shooting and
only played 24 minutes.
Freshman guard Desiree
Contreras, who has been
slowed by injuries and
illness in her first
year, came off the bench
to score 13 points on
3-for-3 shooting in 13
minutes.
Schreiner travels to
Alpine this weekend to
take on the Lady Lobos
of Sul Ross State.
Last Saturday, Schreiner
posted a 63-54 win in
Kerrville over the same
team. The
Mountaineers rallied
from a 10-point halftime
deficit to get the win.
