Lady Lobos Avenge Loss,
Break Losing Streak with
Win over SU
Sul Ross State avenged a
loss in Kerrville and
broke its long losing
streak with an 83-79 win
over visiting Schreiner.
The Mountaineers had 30
of the game's 49 fouls
as the two teams
combined for 65 free
throws.
Schreiner jumped out to
a solid lead early,
getting on top by seven
points on two occasions,
8-1 and 10-3. SRS
(1-16 in ASC) took its
first lead, 17-16, with
8:32 before halftime.
The Lady Lobos' 16-4 run
eventually opened up a
seven-point margin of
their own and the home
team still led, 32-29,
at halftime.
In the second half, the
Mountaineers (1-16 in
ASC) closed the gap and
then traded baskets over
the opening five
minutes, but a 13-2 run
over the next five
minutes gave Sul Ross
State its biggest lead,
53-42, with a quarter of
the game left.
Schreiner got within two
points on five separate
occasions but couldn't
even up the game and had
to suffer the defeat.
Freshman Hannah Burleson
had 16 points, six
rebounds and four
assists to lead
Schreiner. Senior
Monica Enriquez scored
15 points. Senior
Xandria White had 11
points and freshman Lia
Phillips 10.
Freshman Caitlin Gayle
saw her first action
since breaking her hand
last month and scored 6
points and grabbed 8
rebounds as SU
outrebounded Sul Ross
State 45-34.
