UMHB Beats Cold-Shooting
Mountaineers, 75-53
Mary Hardin-Baylor held
Schreiner to less than
25% shooting from the
field to post a 75-53
home win over SU in
Belton Saturday
afternoon. SU did
a good job avoiding
turnovers and nearly
matched the Lady
Crusaders' rebounding
effort but couldn't find
the range on its jump
shots.
For the first 10 minutes
of action, the two teams
were basically even.
At that point, Schreiner
(2-17 in ASC) was ahead
22-21. The
Mountaineers were in the
middle of a 9-0 run that
saw them take their
biggest lead of the
game, 28-21, with 7:34
before halftime on two
free throws by senior
Monica Enriquez.
UMHB scored the next 15
points to turn the game
around. Schreiner
temporarily dented the
run on two more Enriquez
free throws but that was
the only scoring in the
final seven and a half
minutes for SU. By
halftime, the Lady Cru
(11-8 in ASC) led 43-30.
Schreiner got no closer
than 15 points the rest
of the way.
Enriquez led all scorers
with 24 points, six
rebounds and four
steals. She was
the only Mountaineer in
double figures.
Senior Xandria White
scored six points but
also had 14 rebounds.
SU closes out its season
this week with two home
games, Thursday and
Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's game will be
the final one for
Enriquez who will
certainly be remembered
as one of SU's all-time
greatest players.
