McMurry handed Schreiner
a 83-61 loss that
concluded the 2008-09
season but more
importantly for
Mountaineer fans, it
also concluded the
career of senior guard
Monica Enriquez.
Both she and fellow
senior Xandria White (11
points, 9 rebounds) were
honored before the game.
Once the game started,
McMurry (17-4 in ASC)
wasted no time in taking
control. McM took
their first double-digit
lead five minutes into
the game. The
Mountaineers (2-19 in
ASC) got back to within
seven points but McMurry
slowly pulled away
throughout the rest of
the half. At the
break, McMurry led
51-27. Schreiner
played to a standoff in
the second half but
never threatened.
This game was about
saying goodbye to
Enriquez and White.
Enriquez scored more
than 1,550 points, had
450+ rebounds, more than
300 steals and 350
assists over four years.
During that time, she
was always the
opponent's #1 focus on
defense, making her
accomplishments that
much greater.
She's had several
milestone games -
including several triple
doubles - but her best
may have been at
Hardin-Simmons and
January 15, 2009 when
she scored 18 points,
grabbed 11 rebounds,
dished out eight assists
and had 8 steals for a
near "quad-double".
White has also had a
very strong senior
campaign, despite
playing on an injured
knee all seaso. Sh
will have surgery to
repair the damage next
week.
In her final game,
Enriquez again led SU in
scoring (14 points) - on
only six shots - and
assists (4).
Freshman Hannah Burleson
scored 13 points and
displayed a growing
offensive presence
throughout the season.
SU outrebounded McM
37-35 but still had 26
turnovers. McMurry
shot 51% from the field
while the Mountaineers
struggled to less than
31% shooting.
