Shoot Second Best D-III Scores at UMHB Invite
Freshman Liz Calderon finished
in third place overall among all American Southwest
Conference players (ASC) at the UMHB Spring Invitational at
wind-swept Mill Creek CC in Salado, TX. On the final
day of the tournament, she was joined by her freshman
teammate Kattie Spencer in shooting the second best scores
of the day - in very difficult conditions - among all the
NCAA Division III players in the field.
Schreiner moved up two spots to finish in 11th place in the
tournament, despite playing with only four players.
In a tournament that features nationally ranked NAIA and
past national champion NJCAA teams (scholarship programs),
Calderon finished in 20th place overall among all players.
When you factor out the scholarship programs, Calderon's
(and Spencer's) play shines. All ASC schools were at
the tournament.
Playing in high winds, the Mountaineers struggled with
nerves on day one. Schreiner was 13th after the first
day. Sophomore Andrea Roach was the lone bright spot,
shooting her career best score despite the conditions.
On day two, when the rest of the field was dealing with much
higher scores due to even more wind and much lower
temperatures, Spencer shaved 10 shots off her opening round
while Calderon lowered her first day score by two.
Roach may have played even better than her opening round,
finishing just one stroke higher than her first day despite
the extreme conditions.
"Our first day, with the exception of Andrea, we probably
didn't handle our emotions as well as we could have", said
Coach Ron Macosko. "I was really proud of our gals
because we learned from the mistakes we made that first day
and managed the even tougher conditions much better on day
two. We saw both the promise and the pitfalls of where
we are moving with our program. Anna (co-head coach
Anna Acker-Macosko) and I have to keep reminding ourselves
about how young our players are. We just can't use
that as an excuse." |
