Minhas
Earns First Team All-ASC (Again) with Runner-Up Finish

For the second year in
a row, sophomore Surraya Minhas saved her best play for the
last tournament of the year and finished as the individual
runner-up at the ASC Championships at Hurricane Creek
Country Club in Anna, TX. With her second place
finish, she again earned first team All-American Southwest
Conference. Last year, as a freshman, Minhas finished
fourth at the ASC Championships to earn her (and the
fledgling program's) first, first-team All-ASC award.
Minhas was in third place after completion of the first
round with a 78. She trailed only Samantha Humphrey of
UT-Tyler and Leslie Lee of LeTourneau (77). In the
second round, despite slipping slightly to an 84, she moved
past Lee who stumbled with a 86. Minhas improved two
strokes over her 2007 scores of 79, 85=164. Humphrey
shot an 83 in the second round to win the individual title
by four shots over Minhas. Lee was tied with Ashley
Luecke of Hardin-Simmons for third place, one behind Minhas
at 163.
SU freshman Liz Calderon didn't fare as well. Calderon
was Schreiner's highest ranked player going into the
championship, but she struggled with nerves and was only
able to manage a 26th place finish - which was her lowest
finish of the year. Freshman Kattie Spencer also
qualified for the championship tournament but couldn't
participate due to an academic conflict. |
