Second Day
Struggles Drop SU to 10th Place
The Schreiner Women's Golf
team had trouble with rainy conditions in the second round
of the TLU Lady Bulldog Invitational and fell to 10th in the
final team standings. The hard rain hindered the
players and eventually halted play for about an hour before
play resumed. The Mountaineers - in 8th place after
the first day - struggled with the conditions more than most
of the competing teams and lost two spots in the 14 team
field.
Beginning only its second year
of competition and with a roster of freshmen and sophomores,
the young SU team was right in the middle of the field after
day #1. Sophomore Surraya Minhas, last year's first
team All-ASC performer, was in the top 5 overall after an
opening round of 79. Liz Calderon, playing her first
collegiate tournament, shot a solid 82 and was in 9th
individually. Another freshman, Kattie Spencer,
started slowly on her first three holes but came back strong
on her second nine with a 39 for a total of 86.
All three did not fair as well in the second round.
Minhas could only manage a 91 while Calderon and Spencer
shot 90 each.
Minhas finished in 16th place
in the 70 player field and was Schreiner's top finisher.
Calderon was 23rd while Spencer finished 32nd.
Sophomores Andrea Roach (66th) and Danielle Hinson (67th)
rounded out SU's scorers.
Schreiner finished 4th out of
the seven American Southwest Conference schools competing in
the tournament. Host Texas Lutheran, the defending ASC
champions, finished six shots behind SU. Minhas finished 5th among the ASC
individuals competing. |
