Mountaineers Show Improvement on Day 2
Shrugging off a disappointing
first day of competition, Schreiner's top three players all
showed improvement and the team moved up to 10th at the UMHB
Fall Invitational in Temple. SU placed two players in
the top 20, individually, in the tournament.
The first day was one that most of the Mountaineer team
would like to forget. Sophomore Surraya Minhas had the
team's best performance, but struggled to an 86. In
the second round, Minhas showed signs of rising to the level
of last spring's first team All-Conference performance -
including recording six straight pars at one point - to card
an 84. Her total left her in 15th place individually.
Freshman Liz Calderon battled back from a 90 in the first
round to match Minhas' second day score and finished 17th
overall in the 60 player field.
Freshman Kattie Spencer overcame a rough two-hole stretch to
start the back nine, playing her final seven holes in
one-over-par, and managed an 87. She finished 28th
overall.
Sophomore Andrea Roach showed significant improvement over
her scores at the same tournament last year.
While the overall result was not as strong as the team had
hoped, there were some bright spots in the event. SU's
top three players again had better scores than the top three
scores from any of the other Division III teams in the field
on day #2. Schreiner will look to build on that
success in its next tournament. |
