place finish.
The Schreiner Women's Golf
team returned to full strength for the second round of the
Lady Comet Invitational and shot the second-best team total
in school history, but still couldn't move up any further
and finished fifth. The Mountaineers featured balance
play in the second round, shooting a 334 total but couldn't
overcome their first round score in trailing four other
highly-ranked teams.
Sophomore Sarah Stillwell led
the SU effort with an 84-83, good enough for eighth place.
Freshman Ashley Hernandez continues her run of improved
play, shooting 87-84 and finished fifteenth. Senior
Surraya Minhas shot a pair of 87's, while freshman Gabby
Rosales was one back after going 93-82 over the 6,163 yard
Canyon Creek course in Richardson, TX. Junior Liz
Calderon had an accident in the practice round and couldn't
play in the first round. She battled her injuries in
round two and posted a solid 85 to help the cause.
Schreiner, minus Calderon, could only manage a 351 in round
one which put the team too far behind in a field that
featured five very strong teams. 17th-ranked
Southwestern won the event, followed by ASC foes McMurry,
UMHB and UT-Tyler. UMHB is currently ranked #9 in the
nation. The Mountaineers were ranked #31 going into
the event.
Still, despite Calderon's absence and injury, and eye
trouble for Rosales, the Mountaineers again displayed the
potential this team has. The team next competes at
Scott Schreiner Golf Course in the 2nd annual Schreiner Fall
Classic on October 20-21. |
