YOUNG MOUNTAINEERS LOSE TWO MATCHES
(9/4/06) Neal
Ellis knew that his young, talented squad would face
nervous moments as his mostly freshmen squad
adjusted to college soccer. At the same time,
he feels that his young players will make an impact
on the ASC over the next several years. Both
scenarios looked likely in the team's opening
weekend.
In their first match against Maryville (MO), SU
looked nervous and it was obvious that the team was
getting used to each other. Maryville took
advantage and raced to a 5-0 first half lead.
Schreiner played much better in the second half but
lost in the end, 7-0.
On
Sunday against a nationally-recognized University of
Dallas team that was playing on its home field, SU
took its first lead as senior Ashley Avalos scored
with barely five minutes elapsed. Dallas
answered right back with a countering goal and added
another just before halftime. Dallas added two
second half goals but it was obvious to all in
attendance that this Schreiner team is going to be
better and more difficult to compete with as the
team comes together. Sophomore goalkeeper Jill
Perez had 17 saves the loss to Dallas.
