DIVISION II UTPB SCORES LATE TO EDGE SU, 3-1
Schreiner
Women's Soccer appears on the verge of turning
heads. In the latest clear sign that the
extremely young Mountaineers are a team on the rise,
it took two very late goals for UT - Permian Basin -
a scholarship NCAA program - to break a 1-1 tie and
post a 3-1 home win.
UTPB scored first, less than fourteen minutes into
the match to get a 1-0 lead. The two teams
battled to a standoff for nearly 60 minutes before
SU sophomore Michele Alcala knotted the match at 1-1
on a pass from senior Ashley Avalos. With the
contest hanging in the balance, UTPB's Ashley
Gutierrez scored the deciding goal with 10 minutes
remaining. They added an insurance goal with
less than 2 minutes to play to end the scoring.
In an example of how close the match was, UTPB edged
the Mountaineers 12-11 in shots on goal.
This
result came less than one day after a 5-0 loss to
ASC-power Texas Lutheran. In that match, the
Mountaineers found themselves down 4-0 at halftime,
but played much better in the second half. |
