AVALOS' HAT TRICK CARRIES MOUNTAINEERS TO WIN

Senior Ashley Avalos scored her first hat trick in two seasons and the timing could not have been better.  Her third goal of the day at the 68 minute mark proved to the be the difference as the Mountaineers posted a key 3-2 ASC win over visiting McMurry.  With the win, SU evens its ASC record at 1-1.

McMurry opened the scoring in the 25th minute but Avalos evened the scored at 1-1 90 seconds later, when she took a crossing pass from sophomore Michelle Alcala and converted the goal.  The score remained tied at halftime.  Nine minutes into the second half, McMurry again took the lead but again Avalos immediately tied it up at 2 each.  This goal, only 3 seconds later, came off a penalty kick.

Avalos' third goal came off a direct kick that was awarded when the McMurry goalkeeper was penalized for throwing an elbow at Avalos in the box.  SU outshot McMurry 22-10 and held a significant 12-3 edge in shots on goal.
