Avalos Nets Three,
Adds an Assist as SU Rolls
Senior
Ashley Avalos' three goals provided some cushion as
Schreiner cruised past first-year program, Howard
Payne. The goal scoring proficiency is nothing
new for Avalos. Last year, she was among the ASC leaders with 9 goals - even though the team only
scored 13 all year. This year, she seems to be
picking up the pace. Over her last four
matches, she has hit the back of the net 8 times.
On Saturday, she also assisted on SU's other goal -
by junior Roxie Harper.
The Mountaineers got on top early and never looked
back. Avalos scored her first
goal to give SU less than five minutes in on an
assist from freshman
Missy Gebhardt. UMHB
answered back two minutes later to knot the score at
1-1. Ninety seconds after that, Harper picked up her first goal of the year on
another pass by freshman
Connie Banayad. Avalos took the match into her own
hands, or more accurately, feet with her second goal
of the day at the 38 minute mark. SU took that 3-1 lead into the halftime break.
She added another goal early in the second half to round
out the scoring in the 4-1 win. It was Avalos'
second three-goal performance in just over a week.
She also hit the net three times in Schreiner's 3-2
over McMurry. Freshman goalkeeper
Jo Jo Ahlf
recorded her first collegiate win (in just her
second start) by stopping 11 shots. With the win, Schreiner
improves to 2-3 in ASC play. |
