SU Women
Picked to Finish 11th in Preseason Poll
(8/23/06) Head Coach
Neal Ellis starts his second season at the helm of a
very different looking SU Women's Soccer program this
fall. If today's poll is indicative, coaches in
the American Southwest Conference (ASC) are noticing
that his efforts should result in a season of improved
play and results for the Mountaineers in 2006.
The
SU women were picked to finish 11th in the 14 team
conference in its preseason poll. This fall,
Schreiner returns one of the ASC's top offensive players
in senior Ashley Avalos. Avalos ranked among the
conference's top goal scorers with 9 last fall, which
accounted for 75% of the team's total output for the
season. This year, Avalos will be surrounded by a
couple of returning players and a bunch of new faces.
A total of 14 talented freshmen and transfers arrived on
campus last week and will begin their careers on Friday
in an exhibition match vs. Hill College. These new
faces should make life much better for Avalos and her
returning teammates as opponents can no longer key on
just a couple SU players. This massive
transformation will give the team with some early
growing pains, but look for the Mountaineers to be a
highly-competitive team as the season goes on. |
