OLLU Deals 2-0 Win Over Injury-Depleted SU
NAIA scholarship
program Our Lady of the Lake ran its record to 3-0-1
with a 2-0 shutout over visiting Schreiner. It
was the opening match of the season for the
Mountaineers (0-1) - a non-scholarship NCAA program
- and was the first match for new Schreiner Women's
Soccer head coach Wayne Hinkley.
While the Saints were
able to benefit from 24 players on their roster, SU
was dealing with a rash of preseason injuries and
had only 12 available players at the beginning of
the match. When Schreiner lost one of its
freshman (Kathryn Adcock) early in the second half
after a collision, they were down to
the minimum 11 players but still had a respectable
result in the match.
OLLU got a goal in the
first half from Tabytha Horseman and had the 1-0
lead at halftime. In the second half, Bianca
Vasquez added a goal to make it 2-0 and end the
scoring."
Senior Susan Burger started in goal for SU, which
marked the first time she had played the position
during her entire college career and was the first
time she'd started in goal since prior to high
school. For the match, she had 15 saves.
Burger was not alone in keeping the score close as the Mountaineer defense was
solid and only allowed 13 shots during the match.
Offensively, SU did have a couple scoring chances
but was unable to get a shot on goal.
Schreiner
hopes to have several players back in the lineup
this week and as the team gets ready for ASC play in
mid-September. |
