Schreiner Ends Season with 0-0 Tie

Perhaps it was fitting that Schreiner would end its season with a 0-0 tie with McMurry at Moutaineer Field in Kerrville on Saturday.  Neither team was able to win a match in 2008, but the tie did allow Schreiner to stay out of the ASC cellar, and guaranteed that McMurry would be in the cellar.  The difference was that Schreiner recorded its second shutout tie of the year where this match was the only non-loss for McM.

It was also unfortunately ironic that this match, like much of the season for SU (0-15-2, 0-11-2 in ASC), again featured crippling injuries to SU players.  Both sophomore Danni Gomez (knee injury) and freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Hoskins (concussion) had to leave the field on a stretcher.  It's just the latest in an unusual run of injuries that both Schreiner soccer teams have had to deal with and overcome this fall.

The Mountaineers were not sharp early in the match and the visitors controlled the action for the first 20 minutes.  Fortunately, senior starting goalkeeper Susan Burger and her defensive teammates did not allow McMurry (0-15-1, 0-12-1 in ASC) to score.  From the midpoint on, Schreiner started taking control.  SU had more than double the shots that McMurry had, and six times the shots on goal.

Despite the attempts, SU also couldn't score.  Things looked even better with two minutes remaining in regulation when McMurry's Julie Murphy picked up her second yellow card and was ejected from the match.  This was also the final match for SU seniors Stephanie Crane and Alcie Rivera and both had chances to score the game-winner.  Unfortunately for Crane, her day ended seven minutes into the first overtime period when she received a highly-questionable red card and was also ejected.  This drew the ire of SU head coach Wayne Hinkley who earned his only yellow card of the season disputing the call.

In the second overtime period, Schreiner had four tremendous opportunities to end the match but narrowly missed on each occasion and the match ended in a scoreless tie.
