Gomez'
Goal Gives SU First ASC Win
ABILENE, TX - Schreiner
University's Dani Gomez broke
the scoreless tie with less than
five minutes remaining in the
game to beat McMurry 1-0.
Freshman Goalkeeper Genevieve
Monroe earned her fifth shutout
of the season by recording 10
saves.
After a full season of much
improved play all over the
field, SU was unable to break
through in the ASC win column
and has had to settle for
several ties. That was until today.
And it came at the right time,
as SU finishes their season on a
positive note and will prepare
for an even better 2010.
With the win, SU finishes 2009
with a record of 3-11-3 (1-9-3 ASC).
The 2009 season will be
remembered as a breakout year
for the SU defense. During
the past five seasons, SU had a
hard time keeping it's opponent
off the scoreboard. During
that span, the Mountaineer
defense averaged 71 goals given
up per season. The best
year had the defense allowing 52
goals. What a turnaround
this fall. Head coach
Wayne Hinkley, in just his
second season, has brought a new
aura to the program and it
showed dramatically in the
defensive stats. During
the entire season, Schreiner
allowed 32 goals and nearly 1/3
of those goals came against one
team. Take out that match,
and SU allowed just 22 goals in
16 matches. Since there is
just one senior on the team
(Kathryn Fondon) and most of the
roster is freshmen - and that
Hinkley will likely add another
strong freshmen class - the
program looks to be in
particularly fine shape going
forward. |
