Two Late Goals Propel SU Women
To Opening Day Win
KERRVILLE, TX - Schreiner
University Women's Soccer got
its season off to a positive
start as freshmen Alyssa Barrera
and Becky Chiaro each scored
goals in the matches final eight
minutes to give SU a 2-1 win
over visiting Cedar Valley
College. Standout Sophomore goal
keeper Genevieve Monroe
struggled to come up with CVC
shot, and CVC's Kathryn
Rodriguez was able to put the
ball in the net to give CVC a
1-0 lead at the 18 minute mark
of the first half. The score
would remain that way at the
half. Despite the fact that the
Mountaineers outshout the
visitors 10-6.
In the second half, SU held
Cedar Valley to just three shots
but the defensive effort looked
to be in vain going into the
match's final 10 minutes. That's
when Barrera tied the score on a
shot over the goalkeeper's head.
The goal gave Schreiner great
momentum and the Mountaineers
took advantage. Chiaro took
advantage off a deflection by
the goalkeeper and scored the
game-winning goal. Schreiner
head coach Wayne Hinkley had
this to say at the end of the
match, "We had a depleted roster
and both teams started slowly.
The girl's got behind early but
showed great character battling
back to win the match in the
final minutes."
Because Cedar Valley is a junior
college, NCAA rules do not allow
the stats or results to count
for Schreiner University, but it
does count as a match for Cedar
Valley.
