KERRVILLE, TX
–- Visiting University
of Houston-Victoria spoiled Schreiner's
opening game of the 2012 season with a 3-0
win over the Mountaineers on Friday
afternoon. UHV (1-0), a scholarship
NAIA program, took advantage of early nerves
by SU (0-1) to get a 2-0 lead in the first
20 minutes. Nori Martinez and Tyler
Leal scored the goals.
Schreiner tightened up its defense and
seemed to calm down as the first half went
along and had a couple of solid scoring
chances. Freshman Bria Howard probably
had the best opportunity in the first half
but was stopped by UHV goalkeeper Jennifer
Sanchez. The Jaguars tacked on another
goal barely one minute after halftime for
the eventual final score. Still, it
was a solid effort for SU, being outshot
7-13. Howard and senior Lacey Warner
had two shots each for the Mountaineers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Horner stopped
seven of the 10 shots she faced.
Schreiner returns to Mountaineer Field
Saturday afternoon when the team hosts future conference mate
Centenary at 2:00 pm on Saturday at
Mountaineer Field. Centenary is in its
first year as a member of the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference and Schreiner
joins the same league next summer.
