Jones, Phillipi
End Season on High Note
(4/18/06)
Senior
Leslie Jones won her
final collegiate match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #1
singles in Austin. Teammate
Tina Phillipi won her
second match in the last four at #3 singles, but the
Mountaineers didn't have enough healthy or available
players to win the match and dropped at 7-2 score vs.
Concordia-Austin.
Jones nearly went 2-0 on the day, but she and partner
Emily Cox were edged out at #1 doubles by a 9-8 (7-4)
count.
Howard Payne
Shuts Out SU, 9-0, in Jones' Last Home Match
(4/14/06) It
wasn't the way
Leslie Jones would have
wanted her final home match as a Mountaineer to go, but
she battled to the end. Howard Payne was able to
blank Schreiner, 9-0, but Jones did her best to stave
off defeat. She lost a
close match at #1 singles by the count of 7-5, 6-4,
which was SU's closest match of the day. She also
dropped her final doubles match, with partner Kristen
Morton, 8-5. That result was also the best doubles
match of the afternoon. Jones' career will close
when the Mountaineers final regular season match takes
place next week at Concordia-Austin.
TLU Blanks
Mountaineers 4-0
(4/11/06)
SU,
which has been plagued by injury and illness this
spring, was down to three healthy players in its match
with Texas Lutheran. The result was evident before
the match was even started as Schreiner fell by the
score of 4-0. The latest
obstacle was the illness of SU's top player,
Leslie Jones.
With her also out, the remaining players had to move up
a spot to compete against TLU. SU could only field
one doubles team.
Phillipi Wins
First Collegiate Match but SRS Gets 7-2 Win
(4/7/06)
Tina Phillipi won her
first collegiate match, at #4 singles, but it
wasn't enough as Sul Ross State posted a 7-2 win over
Schreiner. Phillipi, a sophomore, won her match by
scores of 6-3, 6-7 (10-6). Also winning for the
Mountaineers was the top doubles team of
Leslie
Jones and
Janna
Soefje who defeated the Lady Lobos top duo by
an 8-5 count. Since SU only had four available
players, Schreiner was behind 3-0 before the match
started. Emily Cox lost at #3
singles by the score of 7-5, 6-2.
Southwestern
Shuts Out Women's Tennis
(4/5/06)
Southwestern University took advantage of a shortened SU
roster to post a 9-0 win over the Mountaineers in
Kerrville.
Leslie Jones and
Kristen Morton, who was playing in place of injured
Patty Santiago, were
competitive with Southwestern's top doubles duo but were
beaten 8-4. In singles, Emily Cox (#3) and
Janna Soefje (#4) each
put up a battle but each fell by identical 6-2, 6-3
scores.
Jones Gets Two
Wins but McMurry Beats SU, 7-2
(3/25/06)
Leslie Jones
earned two wins in SU's ASC opening match but McMurry
was able to score a 7-2 win. Jones paired with
Patty Santiago at #1
doubles to beat McMurry's top duo, 8-4. She then
won at #2 singles by 7-6, 6-4 scores. Santiago
nearly won her match at #1 singles but was edged out,
5-7, 6-1, 7-6. It was SU's best match of the year
and also the first match where the Mountaineers fielded
a full squad.
Women's Tennis
Defeated by St. Mary's
Schreiner was
beaten by NCAA Division II St. Mary's in San Antonio,
9-0. Only four Mountaineer players were able to
participate in the match. According to head coach
Lee Jennings, "Our women continued to struggle, losing
to a fairly strong Division II St. Mary's team. We
expect to have a full lineup for the McMurry match."
Mountaineers
Drop Pair Before Rain Takes Over
Rain was the
big winner this weekend as Schreiner lost two matches to
ASC foes in Dallas. SU lost to both LeTourneau and
UT-Tyler by 0-5 scores before the weather cancelled the
remainder of the weekend's scheduled competition.
Because the team only traveled five members, they were
already down 2 points (#6 singles, #3 doubles) before
the matches started. Although the Mountaineers
tried to overcome the deficit and the weather, it was to
no avail.
In the match vs. UT-Tyler,
Patty Santiago lost
at #1 singles by the scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Leslie Jones lost
at #2 singles, 6-4, 6-3 and Emily Cox lost at #3
singles (6-4, 3-6, 10-4). In the match vs.
LeTourneau, the #1 doubles team of Santiago and Jones
were clipped 9-8 (9-7 in the tiebreak).
SU's #1 Doubles
Team of Jones & Lesosky Finish 4th
Schreiner's
top women's doubles team of
Leslie Jones and
Lacey Lesosky
braved frigid, blustery conditions to finish 4th at the
HEB Invitational here in Kerrville. The tournament
featured 8 teams, including two NCAA Division II
programs, juco power Temple College and several ASC
foes. While the weather leading up to the event
was spring-like, the conditions for the event itself
were anything but as temperatures plummeted throughout
the event and winds increased. This didn't
phase Jones and Lesosky as they defeated Temple
College's top duo of Riley and Moreno, 8-5, in the first
round but fell to St. Mary's top pairing, 8-3, in
their final match. Jones also found success at #3
singles and finished 7th, defeating Howard Payne's #3
player in the final, 6-4, 1-6, 10-4.
Jennings, Bayer Team Up to Win #1 Doubles
The SU #1 doubles
team of freshmen Danae Bayer (San Antonio, TX) and
Gwen Jennings (Kerrville, TX) won the top flight
consolation bracket at the ASC Individual Championships in
Tyler last weekend. Both Mountaineers also advanced to
the quarterfinals in the singles draw, Jennings at #2 and
Bayer at #3, before being eliminated. Senior Leslie
Jones (Uvalde, TX) and freshman Janna Soefje (Round Rock,
TX) also advanced to the quarterfinals in their respective
singles brackets. Jones at #4 and Soefje at #5.
They teamed at #3 doubles and reached the
quarterfinals.
Bayer
Wins Consolation Title
at Dr. Pepper Open
SU freshman Lacey Lesosky
(Uvalde, TX) advanced to the singles semi-finals before
falling to #1 seed Michelle Ash at the Dr. Pepper/Kerrville
Adult Open this past weekend. SU teammate and fellow
freshman Danae Bayer (San Antonio, TX) won the
singles consolation championship but had to battle her
teammates all weekend to get there. First, yet another SU freshman,
Gwen Jennings (Kerrville, TX) knocked Danae into the
consolation bracket with a 7-6, 6-3 win. From there,
Danae knocked off sophomore teammate Becky Bonine
(Rising Star, TX) 6-2, 6-2 and then defeated SU senior
Leslie Jones (Uvalde, TX) in the finals, 0-6, 6-2, 10-2.
Leslie advanced to the title after beating SU sophomore
Tina Phillipi (Pearland, TX). Jones and Lesosky
teamed up in doubles and reached the semi-finals. |
