Women's Tennis Breaks Victory Drought with 5-4 Win
In senior
Patty Santiago's last
match, Schreiner Women's Tennis broke a long ASC West
Division losing drought with a 5-4 win over visiting
Concordia-Austin. Santiago had a big hand in the win
with victories at both #1 doubles and at #4 singles.
Schreiner jumped to a lead after doubles play.
Santiago and
Stephanie Reed posted an
8-5 win in their doubles match and the freshmen duo of
Katrina Priess and
Amanda Alvarado cruised to
an 8-1 win at #2 doubles. SU forfeited the match at #3
doubles because it didn't have enough players. Still,
the Mountaineers held a 2-1 lead going into singles action.
Priess won at #1 singles, 6-1,
6-4, which offset a loss at #2 singles by Reed who was
injured and forced to retire early in the match.
Schreiner bounced back with a win by Alvarado (6-2, 6-0) at
#3 singles and wrapped up the win when Santiago posted a
6-0, 6-1 win in her match.
SU's last ASC West win was in 2004, also against
Concordia-Austin. Just like the 2007 win, Schreiner
had to post the victory short-handed. SU finishes its
season with a record of 1-14 (1-6 in ASC West). |
