Named ASC WT Player of the Week
Schreiner
sophomore Michelle Martinez was named American
Southwest Conference West Division Player of the
Week for action that took place in the week of April
8-14. Martinez, from Harlingen, TX (Harlingen
HS) had both singles and doubles wins against both
Texas Lutheran and McMurry. Her only loss
during the week came against nationally-ranked
Hardin-Simmons.
In the match vs. TLU, Martinez teamed with sophomore
Andrea Da Silva to win convincingly 8-3 at #1
doubles. She then had little trouble
dispatching TLU's Blair O'Brien, 6-2, 6-1 at #1
singles as SU went on to post its first ASC win, 7-2
at the George and Frances Cree Tennis Complex on the
Schreiner campus.
In the McMurry match, again playing #1 singles, she
defeated Kristin Bray, 6-2, 6-4. Martinez then teams
with her normal doubles partner, senior Stephanie
Reed, at #1 doubles and defeated Bray and Shelby
Carpenter, 8-4. The Mountaineers came up just
short in their match though, falling 4-5.
Martinez is the first SU women's player this year to
earn ASC POW honors. Earlier this season, SU
sophomore men's tennis player Danny Okland earned
the same honor.
