Season Conclusion

Posted: Tuesday, May 3, 2005

The Schreiner men’s baseball team completed a turbulent season in 2005 finishing with a 5-16 mark in the ASC West and a 13-27 overall record. The Mountaineers will miss the playoffs this season rounding out the year in the No. 6 position in the ASC West with only the top four teams advancing to the conference playoffs.

The Mountaineers last trip to the postseason came in 2000 when the team won the American Southwest Conference championship and advanced to the NAIA regional playoffs.

Schreiner’s best plate-appearances in 2005 came from sophomore outfielder, Jeremiah Kester. Jeremiah averaged a .380 clip from the batter’s box over 21 conference games, while leading the team in hits (53), steals (10) walks (34) and on-base percentage (494). Kester was also named the ASC Player of the Week for the week of April 4th.

On the pitching side, the Mountaineers were led by newcomer J.D. Brantley. J.D., a junior, transferred from Texas State University @ San Marcos in the off-season and pitched well for Schreiner racking up a 3-3 record in conference. Brantley led all pitchers in wins (3), complete games (5), strikeouts (30) and ERA (3.18).

“We improved in the wins column this season but our goal like everyone else is to reach the conference tournament,” commented fourth year Head Coach Joe Castillo.  “We lose three seniors that have contributed and meant a lot to our program, but we will return a lot of players with experience,” added Castillo.
