Mountaineers Sail Past Bulldogs in OT

Posted: February 7, 2005

Kerrville, Texas - The Schreiner University Mountaineers (2-18, 2-16) shut down the 4th ranked ASC West Division Texas Lutheran Bulldogs (12-9, 11-7) tonight in a 64-55 overtime win at the Edington Center.

The Mountaineers who trailed at the half 23-19 came back in a big way offensively in the 2nd period.  Senior Jarel Hall and sophomore teammate Jonathan Young would combine for 13 points in the second half.  With the biggest bucket of the evening, a clutch jumper, coming from Hall with 14 seconds left in regulation, which would send the game into overtime.

Schreiner has not had much luck in overtime games going 0-for-2 in OT so far this season.

It was lights out for TLU in the overtime period as Schreiner sailed to a 64-55 victory.  Schreiner’s Kevin Deans and Jonathan Young combined to hit 3-of-4 three-point attempts.  The Mountaineers would hit six of their seven total field goal attempts in the overtime session.

The Bulldogs Tommy Stolhandske scored a game-high 26 points; Stolhandske also had five turnovers, two of which came in overtime.

The loss will most likely bump TLU out of 4th place in the ASC West Division and out of the 2005 ASC playoff race as only the top four teams’ advance to the post-season tournament, hosted by Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.

Next up for Schreiner will be Concordia University on Thursday.  Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Austin.

Schreiner Pushes Indians to the Limit

Posted: 2/4/05

The Mountaineer men’s basketball team (1-17, 1-15) rattled the cage of the ASC West Division 1st place McMurry Indians (16-4, 15-2) last night.  McMurry came into the evening with a four game win streak, which included an 84-73 victory over SU back on January 27th at McMurry.  The Indians would ultimately eke out the Mountaineers by a score of 90-85, but not before sweating it out for 39+ minutes.

Schreiner would force 21 lead changes in the game, and would go into halftime with a 39-34 advantage, turnovers proved costly down the stretch for SU, who gave up the ball 5 times in the last 3:25 of regulation.  Despite the turnovers, the Mountaineers went on a 9-6 run to end the game.

Schreiner's Jonathan Young knocked down two long 3-pointers in a 7 second span to bring the score to 85-88.  But the Indians put the game away on the ensuing possession, hitting two free throws as time expired.

Senior Jarel Hall led the Mountaineers in scoring, contributing 18 points in the 1st half on his way to a 21 points, 7 rebound performance.  He shot 9-12 from the field and chipped in two assists and one steal.

Jonathan Young, who recently moved into a starting role after the season ending injury of sophomore post Aaron Hamilton, posted a season high 20 points, 12 of which came off 3-point shooting.  Young was also a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line.  Young had a complete game on both side of the ball as he also grabbed seven rebounds on the night and recorded two blocks.

SU junior transfer Kevin Deans had a splendid game coming off the bench and scoring 11 points along with five rebounds and two blocks, all of which came in only 20 minutes of action.

Schreiner will play Hardin Simmons at home in the Edington Center this Saturday.  Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.

HSU Pulls Away From Schreiner in 2nd Half

Posted: 1/29/05

The Schreiner University Mountaineer men’s basketball team (1-16, 1-14) was defeated this afternoon in ASC action by the Hardin Simmons University Cowboys (13-5, 11-4) by a score of 76-91.

The game which took place at Hardin Simmons’ Mabee Complex saw the Cowboys lead the entire game with the exception of a 4-2 lead when Schreiner junior Joseph Davis made good on a slashing lay up against the HSU defense.

Schreiner junior Lance Hrncir had the hot hand in the first half leading the way scoring nine points, all within the last 3:36 of the period and his final five points coming in the last minute of the half.

HSU went into halftime with a 38-31 lead over the Mountaineers and would extend that effort in the second half with strong 3-point and free throw shooting.  By the finish of the second half the Cowboys connected on 6 of 13 3-pointers and 29 of 38 free throws while holding the Mountaineers to less than 50 percent from field goal range, 20 percent from 3-point range and only 57 percent from the free throw line.

The Mountaineers played aggressively over the course of the game winning on points off turnovers, fast breaks and paint shots, but suffered with their bench depth.

HSU’s bench outmatched the Schreiner bench by a score of 56 to 39.  Regardless of this effort the Schreiner bench put on quite a show in the second half outscoring its starters 34 to 11.

Leading the way in that effort was sophomore Jarel Williams who led all Mountaineer scorers with 13 points, all of which came in the second half.

Off the bench, junior Kevin Deans also added to the Schreiner cause scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds.

Junior guard Joseph Davis had one of his better games of the season scoring eight points.  Davis also dished out four assists and had two steals on the afternoon.

Schreiner will now return home for a two game stint against Hardin Simmons and McMurry; the first of which coming against McMurry on Thursday at the Edington Center.  Tip off for Thursday’s game is set for 7:30 p.m.

3 Mountaineers Score in Double Figures

Posted: 1/28/05

Three Mountaineer starters scored in double figures during last night’s 73-85 loss to ASC rival McMurry.  Schreiner connected on 8 of 20 3-pointers, their best effort thus far in 2005.

The Mountaineers forced six lead changes over the course of the game, but poor first half shooting and a lack-luster performance at the free-thrown line combined with an aggressive McMurry bench had the Mountaineers playing catch-up most of the second half.

Schreiner started out fast taking a quick eight point lead over McMurry, but slowed down after the 12 minute mark allowing the Indians to retake the lead at the half by a score of 36-30.

Schreiner would start out strong again in the second period, fighting back and taking a one point lead at the 16:09 mark off a 3-point shot by junior Justin Evans, but a determined McMurry bench and a depleted Mountaineer bench combined to hold Schreiner scoreless for over 4 minutes late in the second half.

On paper both teams matched up fairly evenly by the end of the night; both shot around 45 percent from the field and Schreiner did have an 8 to 6 advantage in 3-points.

McMurry posted better free-throw numbers and neither team really took advantage in points in the paint or second-chance opportunities.  The big difference on the night came with bench support.

For McMurry eight Indians saw action off of the bench and contributed 38 points in a combined 91 minutes on the court as compared to Schreiner’s bench which got seven points from four players in 35 minutes of action.

Leading all scorers on the night was Schreiner’s Justin Evans who scored 22 points to go along with four rebounds, and one steal.

SU’s Jonathan Young played a starting role in last night game scoring 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds to go along with two steals and one assist.

Junior Lance Hrncir contributed heavily to the Mountaineer cause scoring 12 points with three rebounds, one assist and one block.

Schreiner will close out a four game road trip tomorrow against Hardin Simmons and then return home for a two game stint next week against McMurry and Hardin Simmons.

Tip off for tomorrow afternoon’s game is set for 3:00 p.m.

Late Rally Falls Short for Mountaineers

Posted: 11/30/04

By: Doug Mitchell

Kerrville Daily Times Sports Editor

Schreiner coach Thirman Dimery has seen this before from his Mountaineers, and it doesn’t mean he likes it any better than he did last season.

Chris Isom scored a game-high 24 points and older brother Cedric Isom added 21, helping the East Texas Baptist Tigers hold off a furious second-half rally by the Mountaineers to hand Schreiner an 89-76 loss in American Southwest Conference play Monday night at the Edington Center.

For the Mountaineers, now 0-3 and 0-2 in ASC play, Monday’s game exhibited a pattern that closely resembled the struggles of last season. Schreiner dug itself early holes in both halves with cold shooting, caught fire and nearly erased a double-digit deficit in the second half, but fell short at the end.

“We need to get off to a good start and haven’t been,” Dimery said. “We play one good half. Our free throws have been killing us and we have to work on that. That’s not a team thing, that’s an individual thing, getting in the gym and doing some extra shooting.”

The line proved to be decisive for East Texas Baptist, which made 23 of 35 free throw attempts, including eight straight in the last 50 seconds to pad its lead against the desperately-fouling Mountaineers, who were in that situation largely due to a 30 of 70 shooting night from the field, and a 9-of-21 performance from the line.

“Offensively we’re getting the looks, just not knocking down the shots or finishing,” Dimery said. “We just have to go to the rim stronger. We kind of shy away from contact.

“You have to find a way score, whether it’s picking up a foul and going to the free throw line, or penetrate, find some other way if your 3-pointer isn’t falling,” Dimery added.

Senior forward Jared Hall scored 15 points and sophomore Jonathan Young led a 48-16 SU bench scoring edge with 16 more, including three 3-pointers in a 22-12 Schreiner run that cut the Tigers’ lead to 73-72 with 3:33 left to play, after the Mountaineers had opened the second half 1-of-10 from the field.

But two layups apiece from Cedric Isom and Brannon Galentine, around a trey by Schreiner’s Terrill Funchess, extended the ETBU lead to 81-75 with a minute left, and the Mountaineers were unable to connect on their long-range attempts, forcing them into foul mode.

“I was pleased with our kids tonight,” said Tigers coach Bert West, whose team also entered the game 0-2 and 0-1 in ASC play. “We fought for it tonight. They have a good team, we have a good team. You normally think of surges from the offensive end, but our surges came from the defense.”

Sophomore Justin Evans, a Tivy product, also added 10 points for Schreiner while former Antler teammate Matthew Raitz pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for the Mountaineers. Raitz and Evans both transferred to Schreiner from Hope College in Arkansas for the 2004-05 season.

Cedric Isom added 13 rebounds, all defensive, to his night’s work for the Tigers, while Galentine and Abe Sparks added 11 and 10 points, respectively for ETBU.

Incarnate Word Defeats Schreiner

Posted: 11/24/04

By: Clint Hale

Express-News Staff Writer

Tuesday's game between Incarnate Word and Schreiner featured a first half rich with repetition. UIW would establish a lead, only to see the Mountaineers storm back and cut the deficit to single digits.

Sort of a rinse, lather, repeat in college basketball terms.

Apparently, the Cardinals preferred a second-half replete with consistency, as they turned a seven-point halftime lead into a 73-58 victory over Division III Schreiner in front of 256 fans at McDermott Center.

"I'm happy we won at this point," UIW coach Al Grushkin said. "We're known as being disciplined and very good defensively. But we're not real disciplined right now."

The Cardinals (3-1) had a difficult time distancing themselves from the Mountaineers in the first half, and led 10-7 through seven minutes of play. However, UIW utilized a 9-2 run in extending the lead to 10 points midway through the first. Schreiner cut the deficit to 21-19 at one point and trailed just 34-27 at the half.

In the first, UIW shot 53.8 percent from the field. But the Mountaineers (0-1) kept pace by hitting five 3-pointers and forcing 10 Cardinals turnovers.

"They are so much better than any Schreiner team I've ever coached against," Grushkin said. "They have some athletes and some speed, and I'm not looking forward to when we have to go there (on Dec. 11)."

Schreiner's threatening nature turned into a full-scale menace in the second, when the Mountaineers started the half on a 10-2 run in taking a one-point lead. The Cardinals seized the advantage on the ensuing possession, only to see Schreiner regain the lead on its next series.

After the teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes, UIW began its ascent midway through the second. Leading 50-46, point guard Paul Connolly connected on a 3-pointer from the left wing. Schreiner turned the ball over, and Anthony Jackson quickly turned the miscue into points with an uncontested dunk on the other end.

"That helped build everybody's confidence and seemed to carry over," said Jackson, whose dunk helped spur a 32-16 UIW run to finish out the game. "I had to get the team going. I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

On the season, the Mountaineers are now 0-1 overall.  Schreiner's next game will be this Saturday against LeTourneau University at home in the Edington Center on the Schreiner campus.
