It was a
game that could have gone either way; Schreiner University playing
at home for the fifth time in eight days versus the Howard Payne
University Lady Jackets. Coming into the mach the Lady Jackets
were tied with the Mountaineers for the final spot in the ASC West,
with both teams looking for a second conference win.
The action
started out quick with the steady hitting of Allison Staley (Marion,
TX) of the Mountaineers who connected for 16 kills, six of
which were aces and eight blocks over the course of the match.
Schreiner
was able to pull out a first game victory 30-28, only to drop the
second 27-30. It was a combination of service (21) and hitting
(24) errors by the Mountaineers that kept the Lady Jackets close
throughout.
Games three
and four were also split between the Mountaineers and Lady Jackets
with the third game going to Howard Payne 27-30 and a decisive
fourth game victory going to Schreiner 30-19.
It was the
defensive leadership of sophomores' Amanda Sinders (Round Rock, TX)
and Whitney Barron (Richmond, TX) that kept the Mountaineers alive
in the fourth game. Sinders and Barron were able to combine
for 44 digs on the night.
In the fifth
and final game of the night the Mountaineers went down quick
allowing mental errors to overcome them, it wasn't until a 9-13 Lady
Jacket advantage that the Mountaineers were able to control their
hitting and bring the game in close to 13-14 in favor of Howard
Payne. Unable to return a HPU serve, the game was over with a
final score of 13-15 and a difficult Mountaineer loss.
On the
season the Mountaineers now move to 4-12 on the season and 1-7 in
the ASC West. Schreiner's next game will be on Friday, October
6th against the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor in Belton, TX.

The
Mountaineers faced off against the Hardin Simmons Cowgirls this
evening at the Edington Center on the campus of Schreiner
University, the result was a 3-2 loss which puts the Mountaineers
4-10 on the season and drops them to 1-5 in the ASC West.
After
splitting games one and two, the Mountaineers routed the Cowgirls in
the third game by a score of 30-20. It was the assertive
hitting of sophomore Rachel Mikulec and an overall good passing
game, that showed the offensive dominance of the Mountaineers
which has been missing most of the season.
Game four
saw a lead and the match slip away from the Mountaineers, due to too
many defensive mistakes and hitting errors. SU did manage a
comeback late in the fourth game when they went on a 6-2 run which
brought them to 23-29, but were unable to close in any further.
The Cowgirls
walked away with a 15-9, fifth game win.
The
Mountaineer Volleyball team will host McMurry University (8-4)
tomorrow at 1:00 pm at the Edington Center.

The Mountaineers Volleyball team
played their first home game of the season last night at the
Edington Center on the campus of Schreiner University. The match,
against ASC rival Texas Lutheran went down to the wire with the TLU
Bulldogs ultimately taking the Mountaineers in four games, 30-25,
30-26, 26-30, 30-20. On the season the Mountaineers now drop to 1-6
and the first place ASC West Division, Bulldogs move to 6-2.
From the start, the
Mountaineers looked tough going up 6-0 in the first game. They led
until passed up by TLU, at 26-22. The Bulldogs were very successful
on the offensive end and eventually took the first game away from
SU, 30-26.
The second game had
Schreiner down the entire game lingering every TLU score. SU tied
the game at 26 but fell short, dropping game two, 30-26.
The third game showed
more dominance from the Mountaineers. They were able to surpass the
Bulldogs and never looked back. SU lead throughout most of the
third game, winning 30-25.
But, the damaged had
already been done. SU had to win two more games for the victory and
TLU would not let up. Of the third game, Greenlee said, “we just
approached things a little different mentally this time around.”
Drained after an
intensive third game, the Mountaineers got down quick to the
Bulldogs and were unable to turn the tide. “First two games we had
missed a lot of serves and that really hurt us,” said coach Greenlee
after the match. Greenlee would later add, “Also, were young and a
little more inexperienced than TLU.”
The Lady Mountaineers
finished the match with ten blocks total while TLU finished with
only six. Senior Middle Blocker Allison Staley and Sophomore
Outside Hitter Rachel Mikulec both led the Mountaineers with seven
kills each. Sophomore, libero/setter, Whitney Barron led the game
with 12 digs.
The Lady Mountaineers
will be competing in the Big Country Classic this upcoming weekend
in Abilene TX.

For the
second time in five days the Mountaineers Volleyball team has played
the Tornados of Concordia University, this time though the
Mountaineers were playing on Concordia's home turf.
Unfortunate
mistakes throughout the four game match cost the Mountaineers a
crucial win and their first conference game of the season.
The
Mountaineer kept the Tornados at bay, scoring more overall kills,
total attempts, and a better hitting percentage for the entire game.
It was the
18 service errors and 10 ball handling errors that cost the game for
the Mountaineers.
With the
offense still forming it's game, the defensive abilities of Whitney
Barron (17 digs) and Amanda Sinders (13 digs, 9 kills) kept
Schreiner in the contest over the four game stretch. Megon
Bogler also contributed with five overall blocks.
Rachel
Mikulec lead the offense with 14 kills and an ace. Not far
behind Mikulec was Kassaundra Barlow with 12 kills and an ace.
Of note, was
the play of sophomore setter, Emiliana Patlan who recorded 42 assist
for the night. 42 was the second most this season for Patlan,
who recorded 49 assist during the Sul Ross match at the University
of Dallas tournament, this past weekend.

Mountaineers
Fall 0-3 In Season Opener
KERRVILLE, Texas – The Schreiner University Mountaineers opened
their season Wednesday night in a 18-30, 23-30, 21-30 loss to the ASC preseason favorite, Texas Lutheran Bulldogs at the Tostengard
Activity Center in Seguin.
The Mountaineers
experienced passing problems early in the first match, scoring only
five kills in twenty-five attempts.
“A team like TLU
won’t allow you to make too many mistakes and stay in the game,”
said Coach John Wyatt Greenlee of his first match as the
Mountaineers head coach.
“Our passing got a
lot better in the second and third games…our movement picked up and
that helped our defense as we progressed,” said Greenlee.
Overall, the
Mountaineers were able to step up their game more on the defensive
end by getting more digs than the Bulldogs (37-34).
Whitney Barron, a
sophomore from Richmond, led the way defensively with nine digs.
Emily Patlan, a
sophomore from San Antonio, also helped out on the defensive end
with 8 digs and 2 blocks.
Megon Bogler, a
senior from Medina, led the offensive charge for the team recording
six kills for a .545 hitting percentage.
Rachel Mikulec, a
sophomore from Inez, hit for six kills and only 2 errors as well as
7 digs.
Coach Greenlee
said of the match’s outcome, “Whitney played great defense and Megon
and Rachel hit strategically…overall there are a couple of tactical
pieces to our game that need to be worked on, but as long as we keep
up our intensity, we will win games.”
The Mountaineers will play
this weekend in Irving against ASC rival Concordia-Austin. They will
also play against Sul Ross State University, University of Dallas
and ASC powerhouse Austin College at the University of Dallas
Tournament. The matches will be played on Friday and Saturday.
